Emma (229 KP) rated The Dark Circle in Books
Jul 2, 2020
We read this book for the third month of my book club, when I read the blurb, I thought it sounded great and wanted to get stuck in straight away. My excitement was short lived, lasting only a few pages, i found it boring and dull, too long winded and by halfway through i was tired of the book. By the time i had 50 pages left i was ready to give up. If i had bought this book myself i would have put it down straight away. It was only the fact that it was for book club that i carried on with it I was so disappointed by this book that sounded like it had so much potential.

The call of Cthulhu
By H. P. Lovecraft
The Call of Cthulu, the tale of a horrifying underwater monster coming to life and threatening mankind, is H.P. Lovecraft's most famous and most widely popular tale, spawning an entire mythology, with the power to strike terror into the hearts of even the Great OldOnes.
This is the one everyone seems to go on about! I’m so far loving my Lovecraft journey. This is my favourite so I can see why suggest this as the first one you read, I’m not sure you should as I’ve read a few of Lovecrafts short stories and I’m finally getting to grips on how he writes. Which I think is why I enjoyed this more the I thought.

Since the first time I took S.J. Bolton’s book in my hand I cannot stop admiring her. Read all of her books and gladly continue doing so. They mesmerise me.It is extremely intriguing from the first pages of the book. The way it is written never gets you bored. I loved the different approach to telling the story via letters and news paper articles. It is perfectly blended together with the story of the book. The best thing about this book is that it is easy to read because chapters are short. The characters are very charismatic and interesting personalities. The story has great twists in it. Once you start reading it captivates you because every chapter invites you to find out “what next?”.

Merissa (12611 KP) rated Micah's Calling (All The King's Men #3) in Books
Jun 2, 2023
A perfect short to accompany Micah, Sam and Trace's story. These three are so interwoven, I can't imagine reading about one of them without the other two. This gives more insight into Micah and Sam's relationship, and how Trace becomes more than just a friend, something a whole lot more that is difficult to label. I can't wait to read more about the AKM and these three in particular.
Once again, extremely well-written and a wonderful addition to the series. Definitely recommended.
* A copy of this book was provided to me with no requirements for a review. I voluntarily read this book, and the comments here are my honest opinion. *

Merissa (12611 KP) rated Her Love, Her Dragon: The Saga Begins (Dragon Guards 0.5) in Books
Jun 8, 2023
If you love Julia Mills' Dragon Guards series, then you really should read this book. This short story tells you how they came to be, how the first person was merged with the first dragon. This is a romantic story, a tale of such deep and meaningful love between two people that nothing can sunder their connection.
With amazingly life-life characters, full of life, action and adventure; this is a novella to be savoured. The Dragon Guards series is simply outstanding, and that is how I would describe Her Love, Her Dragon: The Saga Begins. Simply Outstanding and a must-read for all dragon lovers! Highly recommended.

Frecklesxoxo (6 KP) rated Cutter Boy in Books
Feb 27, 2019
I was surprised to like this book. I thought that it was a very sensitive subject that was dealt with in a way that didn't glorify cutting. It was a very short story, I read it in a few hours and I think it could have perhaps been a little bit more fleshed out (no pun intended)
But the characters were great and it was an engaging and difficult story.
It really promotes help, to not suffer alone.....a problem shared is a problem solved!

Miguel Covarrubias (143 KP) rated Gate Crashers in Books

I enjoyed the book. There were elements of Douglas Adams in the book, but where the book fell short was trying to only stay slightly with one foot in the silliness and one foot in serious satire. I don't feel like the two could be reconciled as one. It was entertaining, but it really just wanted to build tension which I wasn't feeling at all. This of course may just be a personal taste, but It was only a 3 out of 5 star read for me.

Sara Cox (1845 KP) rated Losing the Stars in Books
Mar 28, 2020
This is a very short piece of creative writing. And when o first read it, mi initial thought was "eh?". Which is why I never review straight away. After having a few days to ponder it, I realise the depths of interpretation is has. What the messengers represent to the different characters and how these representations have a massive affect on their actions and thus leading to the final part of the story. It was beautifully written, but allow it sink in before you make a judgement!
