Barrowbeck starts off as a cautionary folk tale (more the “everyone dies horribly” type, granted, but it still has a hint of the myth and legend about it), and then each story brings us closer to the modern day and beyond.
There is something in Barrowbeck that needs payment of some sort - a devil or a demon? We never see it, but we do see what it drives people to.
I don’t know if I could even describe what happens in this. It’s a series of interlinking short stories, and I didn’t know where I was being taken next, but I was happy to go! There were some seriously sinister stories in this gem of a book. The last story, although extreme, really didn’t feel all that far fetched. The extreme ramifications of Climate Change are only around the corner, after all.
This is a firm favourite - wonderful writing, and a really unnerving collection of stories. And if you haven’t read Starve Acre yet, get on it!

This was amazing, It made me laugh and cry. I wanted to devour it and savour it.
All of these books and the short stories are written so beautifully and you can't help but fall in love with the characters.
Some of the one liners in this book had me laughing out loud.
'Can I lose my watch in you?'
So typical of Kinsley, poor young Nora had know idea what it meant at first and it never fails to make me laugh.
Only problem now is having to wait for the next one.

Kristin (149 KP) rated Strange Little Girls in Books

The title definitely doesn't lie -- these are some STRANGE little girls. Each story is so different from the last, and they all suck you in and don't let up until the end. There are even a couple I could see being turned into at least a novella on their own, as I would love to read more about that particular girl's story.
Really interesting read, and since it's a collection of short stories, you can read a little bit at a time and not forget where you are.

Although it's just enough to wet your appetite, it's not enough to really get your teeth into but I would definitely recommend you read the full length stories and use this as an added extra.
Thank you to the publisher, Random House UK, Vintage Publishing via NetGalley in return for an honest and unbiased review.
