"Years ago I was on the Sundance jury and handed an award to a bright young Damien Chazelle for one of his short films, which naturally means I can now take credit for his entire career. Honestly though I don’t know how he keeps topping himself. When I was little, I saw “The Right Stuff” and was enthralled. Even after three hours I wished it didn’t have to end and could continue telling the story of the space race in such amazing fashion all the way to the moon landing. Now, over thirty years later, I finally got my wish. “First Man” crackles with energy and dread – the direction, the sound design, the edit, cinematography, it just felt so sharp and right in every department. It’s Mr. Chazelle’s strongest work to date and maybe my favorite film of the year."

"Made on the wonderful jungle sets of King Kong while that epic’s special effects were being finished, this is one of the great action-horror films and has provided a template for many “rich sicko” melodramas—the entire “torture porn” subgenre springs from the obsessions of its villain, Count Zaroff (Leslie Banks). Adapted from a short story by Richard Connell and codirected by Kong’s Ernest B. Schoedsack and character actor Irving Pichel, it has one of the most perfect plots in horror: a big-game hunter (Joel McCrea) changes his mind about how much fun his preferred sport is when he’s shipwrecked on an island where a mad Russian who’s grown tired of lesser game has opted to hunt human beings. Fay Wray, another Kong holdover, screams on the sidelines, and a pack of baying hounds provides additional menace."

Something wicked this way comes....

Five people get on an elevator, it appears one of them may be the devil in human form, but who?

It's a ridiculously simple concept but it delivers so well. The acting may not be the greatest but it feels believable, given that most of the action takes place within the confines of an elevator the growing feeling of dread, of distrust and fear spreads through the five trapped individuals.
Meanwhile, a cop tries to figure out who they are and why one of them didn't sign in.

Admittedly when watching I did figure out both of the final twists well in advance of the ending but they still feel satisfactory to the story been told.
I also like the short run time, doesn't feel like there is much wasted motion in the on screen action.

So this is different to Lilou's other books, as in it isn't paranormal and instead is a contemporary romance.

I really liked the story and if I wasn't so picky with giving 5 stars then this would probably have gotten 5 stars but as I am, I'm giving it a strong four.

I like how Lilou writes her romances. They're well thought out and developed so that although they are short you're left feeling all nice and warm that the couple got their HEA.

The first meeting between them was well written and I had shivers as I felt the connection between Faye and Quinn. That continued to the first sex scene and I was hooked from there.

I grew to like all the characters, apart from the bad guy of course.

Can't wait to read more books by the author!

An interesting tale

My biggest criticism about this book is that it has been written for kids, or young adults, and I feel like this is a big shame as it could have been pretty terrifying. But aside from the fairly creepy first chapter, it falls just a little short of being actually scary (at least for a fully grown adult).

But that doesn't mean it's not a good book, because it is and it's such a wonderful idea for a story. I found it well paced and intriguing, with a lot of interesting characters although j do wish we'd have seen more of some of them. There is a certain lack of threat even considering the death theme, aside for the ghoul gate episode, but this is still such an enjoyable read that this doesn't really matter.
