Lindsay (1717 KP) rated Out from the Underworld in Books
Feb 15, 2018 (Updated Apr 9, 2019)
The story starts out by having Heather with her daughter and visiting her father. Heather starts the story of her childhood from when her mother left them. The story is painful but intruding at the same time.
We get the authors view of things through her eyes. We also learn about how she and her sister Jazz needs to deal with grieving. We learn about her life in foster care with her brother and sister. Heather has a hard time with her mother's loss.
We see what happens when their father has to make his decision. The siblings have a bond together. We also learn about their father background and the family history. I learned that the siblings had a strong bond with each other. They can not seem to understand why their father does not want to escape the basement.

Gravity Falls follows the twin siblings Mabel and Dipper when they go to spend their summer with their great uncle, Gruncle Stan. At first, they think it is a normal summer, but Dipper discovers a journal that reveals Gravity Falls is more than it seems. This show has great characters, great comedy, and mystery. It is a great show for everyone.

The idea
The way it was executed
Stunning location, stunning writing and stunning acting
Instant classic
This series has to be one of the best shows Netflix has put their money behind. The original story follows eight individuals as they're visited by a strange vision of a blonde woman. Soon, they find themselves able to visit each other's minds, share their skills and pop up in the strangest of places - all as part of this new cluster they find themselves in. But there's some danger with their newfound ability.
As you'd expect from the Wachowski siblings, it's beautifully complicated and at no point do they talk down to their audience. Everything is wrapped tightly in mystery and you learn things naturally throughout the course of the story. Pretty much every episode feels like a cliffhanger and the story comes to a crashing crescendo.

Enjoyable watch

Just like the first season, season 2 is full of random jokes, questionable choices and mayhem that seems to follow these siblings. After traveling back in time to escape the apocalypse the siblings are spat out in the 1960s, each finds thier own way to adapt and makes a life, until in typical style they discover the end of the world followed them back too.
The season doesn't shy away from some of the bigger topics of the 60s and today, including racism and homophobia. They are well portrayed and addressed and fit in well with the overall storyline.
However, I did not find this season as gripping as the first, but I can't put my finger on why that is.

humour can be subjective, what one person finds amusing another with find side-splittingly hilarious, some of the exchanges between the siblings Pico and Anna are amusing, others I can see they are meant to be but can't find the giggle inside. The illustrations are okay but colourful, the style is somewhat an acquired taste. Overall, I enjoyed the read but would be unlikely to reread in the future.
