Slow at start but gets better
After growing up with the absolutely stand out kids - but not quite - show Horrible Histories, I had nothing but somewhat low expectations for this show. I thought that they might be trying to top something that they couldn't. But I was wrong.
Even though this show is a bit of a slow burner for the first two episodes, it seems to reach some sort of comedic climax after that. Once the characters start to reveal their personalities aside from the typecast stereotypes you find in the first episode this show becomes brilliant.
Must admit, it is very English humour, but me being English - loved it. Watched every episode last night - and I can't stop saying Julian Fawcett MP Legacy.

Rather dull and uneventful
Very slow burner
Thought I'd give this a go as it's just popped up on Netflix. Directed by and starring George Clooney as a lone scientist trying to contact a spaceship returning to Earth after a global disaster. The event on Earth is very vague with no real explanation. The film switches between the spaceship and earth segments for quite long periods. There just isn't enough story or action for the film. A couple of small action scenes and that's it. Which makes the film feel very long. The sets are nice and the space scenes look good. Overall it's a bit slow and predictable.

A very stylish crime tale that carries a political message along with it. It's very brutal and graphic at times with a very gritty feel to the whole film. Quite a slow burner at times, it finally gets going at a quicker pace about two thirds of the way in. A bit more action and less drawn out dialogue scenes, for the sake of it rather than needed at that, would have made it better in my opinion. However with a cast like this you can just sit back and enjoy the story.

Twisted
Not sure what I expected from this one but the description only scratches the surface. This one is not for kids or the feint of heart as the material is very graphic(violence, nudity, sex). The acting was ok and the cinematography good but the story was just weird. Somewhat predictable(not completely) it played out slowly like a "group" version of "The Wicker Man". If you're into "cult" style stories(in the guise of ancient nordic traditions) you'll enjoy this slow burner. Otherwise, not really worth a watch.

A slow burner
Not having read anything by this author before, I didn't know what to expect but the blurb intrigued me so I gave it a punt via Jellybooks and, to be honest, I'm glad I did as this is probably a book that would have passed me by.
I'm not going to go into the plot as this is covered in the blurb and, probably, other reviews but I will say that the story is a slow burner building in intensity as it moves on so that it becomes a pretty good thrilling read that kept me engaged until the end ... you just have to be prepared to invest a little time in the beginning to get there.
The characters are well developed and believable; the writing style I liked very much with the majority of the chapters being either from "Alison ... now" and "Alison ... then" with a few being from the killers perspective and it all comes together at the end in a nice little twist.
Overall, a pretty good read and one I would recommend to readers who enjoy a book that doesn't smack you in the face straight away but gently pokes you in the same place every time ... it has the same effect but takes longer to get there.

An almost monochrome visual that transforms you to a dark place you're glad you can leave at the end of each episode!
A bit of a slow burner - you don't mind leaving the room for a few minutes knowing you probably wont miss that much (1 more)
A few (undeliberate?) loose ends, but maybe saved for Season 2?

Something very different
The whole air around this film was unsettling, I didn't know what was wrong, I couldn't quite put my finger on it but I know there was something out of the ordinary happening. I felt it was a slow burner but I needed to know what was happening. The film exceeded my expectations because I hadn't seen a film with a concept like it before. It did take my breath away. I thought the acting was outstanding. Everyone "appeared" to be normal with the sense that something was very wrong with the situation, this was done on a way that made me believe in the characters.

An atmospheric slow-burner
I usually can't stand films that are slow burners as I just don't have the interest or the patience, but there's something about Ad Astra that really appealed to me.
For starters, it's one of the most realistic sci-fi films I've seen in a long time. It's a straight forward simple plot with no over elaborate schemes or plans, with a stark and immensely realistic view of what space travel would be like. No shiny spaceships or dodgy aliens to be seen. It's dark and gritty, and the ideas in here are so believable - right down to the commercialised Moon base. You spend the entire film expecting something to happen like it does in every other sci-fi, but it never does. Indeed there's a scene halfway through where the crew attend a ship broadcasting a distress call, and what happens is so unlike what you'd expect that it's both genius and downright hilarious. Whilst being a bit slow going in parts, this film doesn't waste any time with useless preamble - you're thrown into the main plot right from the opening scene and it gets straight down to business. It's just a shame that later on it gets a bit bogged down.
The cinematography is mostly fantastic. The music and effects are spot on, although I did think some of the way this was shot made it look a little dated and cheap, and there's rather too many close up shots of Brad Pitt's face. Pitt is very good in this, a step up from the very disappointing Once Upon a Time in Hollywood but I did find his voiceover cheesy and grating at times. Still despite it's negatives, this is a very atmospheric and often tense sci-fi, which is strange considering not very much happens. The ending is perhaps a letdown or anticlimax and if they had made this slightly less of a slow-burner, it would be a perfect example and how best to do a proper sci-fi.

Here's hoping that's a good thing. I got the first 3 books in a set and I have to say I’ve really enjoyed them! They are the new Scooby gang a mismatch of supernatural friends! This one was a bit of a slow burner but still kept the story going! I’m looking forward to more demon action as you don’t get it as much as the usual vampire and werewolves! A good start to a decent series!

I've currently read the first and second book, about to start the third.
Firstly I love this plot, I like the twist that instead of zombies you have haters, which are like extremely high functioning zombies, it unique and very clever, secondly I've read reviews on here about how they thought it was a slow burner,but I like that, he is setting up the story, getting to know the characters and I love the fact that he makes you empathise and root for the haters, I found myself hating the unchanged lol!! really can't say any more as I'll give the plot away but I throughly enjoyed the unique take on a apocalyptic style event that destroys the world you know and take for granted!
