Point Break (1991)

Cult thriller from Kathryn Bigelow: the film that persuaded the world that Keanu Reeves could be an action hero and Patrick Swayze could act. Clean-cut FBI agent Johnny Utah (like that's a real name) goes undercover in the world of surfing to catch a group of elite bank robbers, but finds his resolution tested by his growing attraction to one of them (and his ex-girlfriend).

A solid thriller is elevated to the level of something special by Bigelow's superb direction (banging action and extreme-sports sequences), plus genuine depth of character. Keanu still looks sort of bovine in places, though showing genuine signs of improvement, while Swayze is something of a revelation as an ambiguous spiritual guru/gang leader. Lori Petty is also good, but mostly decorative and underused. All the more impressive when you realise it has basically the same plot as The Fast and the Furious but still feels like a proper movie for grown-ups.

π˜‹π˜Άπ˜¦ π˜‹π˜’π˜΅π˜¦ still did it significantly better imo (Downey Jr. >> Martin, but Candy >> Galifianakis) but that doesn't at all hinder this from being a damn good comedy on the whole. Definitely a lighter affair for Hughes (99% of the comedy here is simply homespun "how can my day *possibly* get any worse??" histrionics done really, really superbly) but nonetheless sports a huge, pulsating heart in its chest. Was surprised with how well this skewers overt-masculinity and the usual reductive formula of these anti-buddy comedies considering its age (and even moreso fresh off the heels of the repugnant excrement that was 𝘚π˜ͺ𝘹𝘡𝘦𝘦𝘯 𝘊𝘒𝘯π˜₯𝘭𝘦𝘴). Even if it isn't always seamless (i.e. the almost comedic abruptness of the ending reveal), it delves within both of its lead characters and gives us a good look where most movies of the genre would reduce them to the sum of their quirks. Rightfully earns its place as one of the definitive Thanksgiving movies.

For a freebie this was good! I'm always a little wary when I download them no matter how good they sound but I have to admit I was quickly drawn into this one, maybe not straight away but as soon as she stumbled into the sports bar and met Lukas.

The spark of interest from both of them was great and I loved reading them falling for each other. I didn't even mind the abundance of sex because I'd become invested in them as a couple and was just waiting for them to get their HEA.

I enjoyed the journey through Paris and learning some of its history as well, such as the scene in the graveyard with the shared grave of the lovers.

I'd like to read more of this series at some point, including the follow on to this to see hoe Lukas and Mia manage the long distance relationship.
