Silent Hill (2006)
Silent Hill (2006)

As visually perfect a cinematic representation of this franchise as we're ever going to get - really knockout stuff to look at (the CGI is sparing but amazing even by today's standards, practicals are godly). Corroded aesthetic, stiff acting, lots of extended cutscene-like exposition and sequences of people picking up/memorizing stuff... exactly like the games. Though, the seamless emulation only really translates to style, as I feel this doesn't really 'get' what makes the franchise's writing so special. The changes this makes to the lore seem very arbitrary, and the story is in big 'I don't care' mode. Too long to justify that, truthfully - but it ends with a fuckton of crazy cultists getting ripped apart by barbed wire and roasting people alive. So I'm pleased. Mitchell and Bean are madly boring, Ferland and Krige *slay* (literally and figuratively). Sidenote: I found it very amusing that there was a profession listed in the credits called "Senior roach simulation T.D.".

Spider-Man 2 (2004)
Spider-Man 2 (2004)
2004 | Action, Sci-Fi
The second of the Sam Raimi Spider-Man films is a shining example of a comic book sequel outshining it's predecessor. Everything is better, the set pieces, the characters, the effects, and the stakes are higher.

Spider-Man 2 owes a lot to Alfred Molina. His performance as Otto Octavius, and later, Doctor Octopus is pure villainous perfection, whilst lending the character a sympathetic undertone. Spider-Man has a fantastic rogues gallery to chooses from, and Doc Ock is one of the more complicated ones. This movie does the character justice.
Tobey Maguire, Kirsten Dunst, James Franco, J.K. Simmons and Rosemary Harris all return from the first film and all cement their positions in movie history as these beloved comic characters.

The effects look a little dated by today's standards, but they're still more than passable, and another great score by Danny Elfman is the cherry on top.
Spider-Man 2 is both a strong sequel, and a strong comic book adaption.

Wildling (2018)
Wildling (2018)
2018 | Fantasy, Horror
A child who has been protected from the Wildlings by her Daddy finds out that her life isn't what she thought it was.

Not quite as horror as I was expecting, the fantasy nature of this one made it much more enjoyable.

A good story with a nice progression to it. It was nice to see Liv Tyler in something after what seems like such a long time. I was also pleased to see Brad Dourif, he's the face you always see in things, and he's always just a little creepy.

The audio effects were good in this one, the extra little grumbles and noises as she's becoming less human, and the enhanced hearing. Each bit comes together to add something to the scenes. I didn't feel like the visual effects quite met up to their standards though.

Still though, this was an enjoyable watch, and although there were some predictable bits everything was genuinely entertaining.
