Books Editor (673 KP) shared own list

Oct 15, 2017
Two finalists for the National Book Awards appear on this week’s New York Times list: Frank Bidart’s collected poems, “Half-Light,” and Carmen Maria Machado’s debut collection of stories, “Her Body and Other Parties.”

We’re nearing the season for ghost stories — or in some cases un-ghost stories and cautionary tales about what happens when we try too hard to put our history behind us.

Four screenings in and I'm still punching the air every time
One of the strongest superhero origin stories so far - the shift from WW2 to WW1 is absolutely inspired, and serves the character beautifully.

A wonderful tale
If you like traditional boarding school stories you will probably enjoy this book. Unlike most books of this genre it starts with the school being set up and how it grows.

Gaimen edited and tweaked classic norse mythology.
A good solid effort to distill and preserve Norse Mythology. I enjoyed the read, but there is nothing new to this set of stories.

Some of these stories I loved, others I hated. So it was an all over the place book for me. It did show me a few authors I definitely want to read more of.

The story, itself, wasn't very interesting. It laid the groundwork for an attack, but it lasted for the whole volume. The two short extra stories at the end of the volume were more interesting.
