Black created a wondrously fascinating world, here. It's a fast-paced story, rich in description. But I felt emotionally detached from the characters; the romance, friendships, and betrayals all fell flat on me.

As I've come to expect from Mosse, a slow start to this book was worth persevering with. Once the story was established it was enjoyable, if not slightly rushed at the end. The Cathar history is rich and intriguing, an educational, yet touching novel.
