Suswatibasu (1703 KP) rated The Fishermen in Books
Oct 10, 2017 (Updated Oct 10, 2017)
A heartbreaking elegy to Nigeria's lost promise
A beautiful and deeply tragic story exploring a family's secrets based in Nigeria. The novel follows four brothers in a small Nigerian village who are given a violent prophecy which shakes their family to the core.
Like most classic African novels in the Achebe-Ngugi tradition, The Fishermen mixes the traditional English novel form with the oral storytelling tradition, dramatising the conflict between the traditional and the modern. It is rather depressing but poignant.

Mark @ Carstairs Considers (2340 KP) rated High Water Hellion (Luanne Fogarty Mysteries, #5) in Books
Mar 9, 2018
Luanne agrees to help her police boss Tony find something his aunt was rumored to throw into a lake. But then they find evidence that his aunt was murdered. With a hurricane coming, will they catch the killer? While there was one obvious plot point, the rest of the book was filled with the usual good storytelling, strong characters, and atmospheric writing.

Cheesy humor (1 more)
Catchy storytelling
Wonderfully Cheesy
I started this book not knowing what to expect, rather expecting not to like it. I was more than pleasantly surprised by how enthralled I became. This book is satire science fiction at its finest. The story is amusing and quick paced. It will keep you going page after page wondering what will happen next. Though some parts are given away early in the book, Hubbard finds a way to make the known events interesting.

Racist and lacking humor beyond the surface
If you've seen the preview for this show you have seen the show. I will not watch more than the pilot because it's terrible. Awkwardness can be funny, but it is not by itself funny. Fish out of water stories are ripe ground, and well worn paths in storytelling. This is trying to be modern family/Blackish/fresh off the boat, while not saying anything of value.
