Morgan Sheppard (1037 KP) created a post

Jun 8, 2026
I've been thinking about swans again, which probably means I'm deep enough into the Brodyr Alarch world that it's starting to think back at me.

Swans in Welsh and Celtic mythology are rarely what they appear. They carry enchantments, wear transformations like second skins, and move between worlds with a grace that makes the crossing look easy when it never is. The Mabinogion is full of creatures that belong to two states at once — neither fully one thing nor the other — and swans embody that ambiguity more completely than almost anything else in the tradition.

There's something about that liminality that feels endlessly useful for storytelling. A character who exists between worlds is a character with a particular kind of loneliness and a particular kind of power. 🦢

This is a big game, bigger than the first one and it is great. Aloy has grown a lot as a person and the cool thing is her friends join her for the adventure as well as new friends. The side quests are great and the main story is quite interesting with some hard sci-fi mixed with great storytelling elements. There's new machines too and it's so much fun finding them. There's photo mode in the game also which is amazing. I enjoyed just exploring everywhere. I did everything in the game and I absolutely loved it. It's very clear this is meant to be a trilogy and the story in this sequel sets up for the third game nicely. It's a fantastic game and well done.

This, I feel, is a strong contender to be the best of the recent Star Trek shows.

It's just a pity that so few have seen it, locked away behind yet another streaming subscription paywall.

This goes back to the original, story-of-the-week, style of Star Trek storytelling (although there is a plot arc running throughout in that Captain Pike knows of his fate), with Ethan Peck reprising his role as Spock from whaterver-season-it-was (3?) of Star Trek: Discovery, as does Anson Mount as Captain Pike and Rebecca Romijin as Number One.

As it is so heavily serialised, some of the episodes are better than others: the standout one, for me, being the penultimate episode which borrows heavily from Alien(s) and Predator!

Barry Jenkins' follow-up to Moonlight manages to be utterly gorgeous and profoundly moving while also being serious and thoughtful. A young black man is arrested for a crime he couldn't have committed (but you try telling the authorities that); the film backtracks to show his relationship with his girlfriend and details her life after his imprisonment, when she learns she is pregnant with his child.

A film of extraordinarily restrained anger and tremendous tenderness and delicacy; the non-linear storytelling structure and emphasis on character and atmosphere over plot may not be to everyone's taste, but every frame of this movie has clearly had serious thought devoted to it, and the performances are uniformly excellent. Would have been a vastly more worthy Oscar nominee than most of the films on the 2019 Best Picture shortlist.

Beautiful Story
OMG!! This is so much more than a simple retelling of the Little Mermaid as it goes beyond the scope of a mermaid who wants to be a part of the human world. This well-paced, beautiful story introduces us to Isla and we get to bear witness to her growth from a young girl with a lot of attitude to a woman who does what needs to be done to save her people.

The characters and storyline are impeccably done and the author's storytelling immediately captivated me. I did not want this story to end and I am beyond thrilled that I was able to read an advance readers copy. As soon as this is available in paperback, I will be purchasing it to add it to my bookshelf as I will be delving into this story again and again.
