"This is a strange book, but it’s strange because it’s packed with so many great characters. It’s the story of a little boy, Owen Meany, who has a peculiar voice and believes he is an instrument of God. He and his friend Johnny are on a Little League team when Owen hits a foul ball that kills Johnny’s mother. From that moment, the boys’ lives are intertwined. I could picture and smell and hear what Owen Meany was like. Irving captures the innocence of youth, of people growing up together and figuring out who they want to be, and discovering the pain of separation—that made the book great for me. It’s about faith and fate, and how you don’t know who the messenger is going to be."

When I accepted this book for review, the summary provided sounded very exciting and engaging… but this book was strange. That’s really the only word I have for it. Weird and strange. Here’s why:

One—I felt out of place while I read this. I felt like I had been dumped into the middle of a book on the first page. There was no introduction to the characters, there were no descriptions, there was no explanation. And it didn’t work. Sometimes in a book, that’s ok, because it works with the mysterious quality of it, but in this situation it was just unreadable.

Two—The writing wasn’t good. It felt choppy and vague and un-detailed and empty, as if the words on the page didn’t mean anything. It was very hard to read. The dialogue felt forced and most of the narrative was unclear.

Three—I have a high tolerance for strange and supernatural, but the stuff in this book was just really odd. I didn’t get past Chapter 3.

I’m really sad that I didn’t like this title because I was so excited to read it, and it sounded great… but it was just a really lame book.

Great kind of strange
I went into the first season thinking I was not going to like this series. I got hooked right out the gate. Great acting, character build and depth is great. They give the right amount in each episode to keep it moving and enticing.

Something different
Bit of a strange film a Western with a horror twist. It has a good cast and witty dialogue but some how felt rather low budget. The main problem is the film could easily be cut by about 30 minutes. It's very slow at the start and middle section. At least it's original.
