Danielle Chaplin (81 KP) rated The Essex Serpent in Books

Decent story
This had the promise of being a really good story with a slight fantasy element to it but it just didn't seem to pull it off for me. The characters were a little strange and hard to follow, and the flow was a little off but the descriptions were vivid and brought the world to life and I liked that there were such diverse range of characters in the story.
Ricky doesn't believe in curses until he touches a neighbor's cursed jewel. Next thing he knows, he has a huge debt to pay off and his friends aren't listening to his theories about the strange things happening in town. Once again, there are good twists to the mystery, great characters, and some fun humor.

Deborah (162 KP) rated Jane Austen Out of the Blue in Books

Even now I've finished it, I'm not entirely sure what to make of this one. It's a sequel of sorts to Sanditon, but includes other Austen characters and even the shade of the author herself, following her death. Nothing happens as you might expect and there's not really a very strong narrative drive through it. On one level I think it serves as a disection of the novel as a literary form. Strange.

Weird, just weird
1st time that I've watched one of the Studio Ghibli films and I've got to be honest it wasnt my cup of tea. Bit like the Lion, the witch and the wardrobe, with a different storyline arc. Very strange and a bit of a mind trip.
Like I say, not for me, but lots of people love it. 8/9 for some. Just a 6 for me
