Amazing abstract game with beautiful tiles
I tried this two player with my friend Brian the other day. It played quickly in about a 1/2 hour. I played very poorly and yet still loved it. He described the rules very well and yet I still didn’t grasp it until after I’d played two rounds. Now I feel dumb for not getting it. It is not easy but is still elegant. It makes my brain work in a completely different was from other board game. Which is what I love about BoardGames. There is so much subtle strategy in this game. Not just which tiles to take but when and which row to put them in and not painting yourself into corners. I see why it’s likely to win game of the year this year.

One of the Classics
Battleship is one of my all time favourite games. It requires a balance of strategy, cunning and sheer luck to help find and defeat your opponents ships, before they find yours.

There's something very endearing and retro about the fact that you can still play this game the "old fashioned" way using real pegs and fold out cases. Call me nostalgic, but it's so much better to play this than an online/electronic version. And also the fact that shouting "you sank my battleship" never gets old.

The only drawback with this game is the replayability in the same session. Games aren't necessarily that long, however once you've played a couple of games against the same opponent, you get a good idea of how they look at strategically positioning their ships and the games can become a little predictable.

Alliance: Heroes of the Spire
Alliance: Heroes of the Spire
Games
Alliance is one of those mobile RPGs where you gain heroes and fuse them together to power them up. It takes a fair amount of strategy to decide which heroes to keep and which to "eat." The battles are turn-based--you can choose to play them manually or set the game to automatic. There is also a variety of things to do: gather armor, mine for gems, explore rifts for treasure, etc., and that's not including the main campaign.

I like Alliance because you don't need cash to have a fun experience with it. The art is pleasant to look at, and as I said, the mechanics are amusing. I imagine this is one of those apps where I'll be obsessed with it for a few months and then forget about it entirely, but in the meantime, yay
