The Hunt for Red October (1990)
The Hunt for Red October (1990)
1990 | Action, Mystery
This was one of those movies (which is now over 30 years old!) that I knew about, but had just never gotten around to watching before.

I have now and, honestly? It's not that great.

Based on a Tom Clancy novel of the same name (one of his Jack Ryan novels) and starring both Alec Baldwin (as Ryan) and Sean Connery (as the Soviet submarine commander Marko Ramius), this purports to be a thriller about, well, The Hunt for Red October (it's in the title, folks!), a new state of the art Soviet sub that is virtually undetectable and in which Ramius is in charge, with his motivations somewhat murky: is he defecting (it's set during the Cold War)? Is he preparing to launch a strike on the US mainland? Why is a Scot pretending to be Russian??

I have to say, I did find it somewhat slow and ponderous, lacking any real threat or even any means of engaging the viewers interest!

Oh-lord-must-we submarine thriller with GERARD! BUTLER! toning it down for once as maverick navy commander Joe Glass, sent to investigate the loss of a US vessel off the Russian coast. Quite how detached from reality this film is is perhaps suggested by the fact that the female President of the USA ends up ordering Butler to save the Russian President (nothing like you-know-who, by the way) from an attempted coup. The film attempts to offset how absurdly silly the plot is by taking itself very seriously indeed; this just results in making it dull.

Special effects are competent, some rather good actors (Oldman, Stephens) phone in reasonable performances - there is very little that is flat-out bad about Hunter Killer, yet it never generates any real tension or excitement. Anything that would actually make it interesting or original seems to have been machine-tooled away. Butler's attempts to avoid going over-the-top are not necessarily for the best. Really just a very tedious, derivative, and formulaic movie.

Personally I find the roles of Denzel Washington and Gene Hackman interesting in this movie for a different reason that I think was intended. Hackman made his career and became a household name throughout the 60's, 70,s and 80's, while maintaining a level of relevance and definitely a level of respect through today. Denzel came into prominence in the 1990's and has become a beloved and highly regarded figure in his field. Watching their respective roles in Crimson Tides almost felt like a kind of "passing of the guard" in more ways than one.

That aside, the movie itself is loosely based on actual events aboard a Russian Submarine wherein a stubborn second in command defied the orders of his superiors and saved the world from certain disaster and preventing World War III. Brilliantly portrayed by all involved, Directed through the lens of genius. One of the greatest underwater films of all time that is still being used as a basis for films being made today (I'm talking to you Hunter Killer).

This wonderful adventure book. Are you looking a book that helps with educational help with you children. Well that draws your boys and girls. It has talks about the history of America during the Revolutionary War.

This is the second book of the series. It got the twin doing a mission for their father. It goes on from there. There seem to be a spy that following them and giving enemy the information. Who could it possibly be.

Ambrose and John seem to be thrown into a mission to make sure gunpowder get where it need to be. In the process they also need to drive the first submarine. They got to make a prison break to save their older brother.

The authors do great job with the story and also having you and all his readers guessing though out the book. Will they save their older brother? You giving the American information to enemy?

The pictures are done well and you can see what the author is talking about. The image are caping to see and look at. The author does a wonderful job with it.
