You're in at the deep end straight away with this story, and it doesn't come up for air for the next 200 pages (or so!). It starts as a ghost story told by their teacher to five 13 year old boys on a training weekend on Rutmoor National Park, and ends - well, that would be giving the game away! We get glimpses into the past with the use of newspaper articles written about missing children and mutilated animals, and we look at the present and one of the survivors from the ill-fated walk. We're also told the story of what really happened on that ill-fated weekend.
The suspense was portrayed really well, and the boys were written with an understanding of how teenaged boys talk and act (much like Stephen King, in fact). I actually dreamt about this story whilst I was reading it, and let me tell you, it wasn't pleasant! And yes, I loved it!
This is great for horror-suspense lovers, and isn't really gory, in my opinion. It just messes with your mind ?

My Thoughts: This is a great suspense novel written by a good author. It's full good mystery, intrigue and keeps the reader guessing.
Nancy Miehl has a wonderful style of writing that keeps the reader entertained. Truly a great book from start to finish. I look forward to read more from Nancy Miehl

A wonderful novel for suspense lovers.
I think the women and the stories of their lives undercover during the Civil War are interesting. I'm glad to see that the book has women representing both sides of the war and doesn't try to tell you which side is best. We have enough of that in the current US political divisiveness. However, I don't like that the author has chosen to break the stories apart by one chapter of each woman and repeating that pattern in the book. It's made the book less enjoyable to read because when you're really getting into one story, the chapter ends and you have to trudge along slowly through the point she's trying to make with the next three characters and by the time you pick it back up, you've forgotten the suspense and drama. It can get confusing and it's quite anticlimactic. It has made it less interesting for me and it is taking me much longer to read this than other books because I just don't my usual enthusiam for this one. I don't know if it was the author's choice to do this or the author's way of building suspense throughout the book but it was a poor decision on someone's part

Actually giving it a 4.5/5, well for this rating a 9.5/10
This movie nailed the suspense of what you can't see can hurt you. I loved this movie, even though I jumped, and got scared a bunch (shush I'm not a huge horror person okay geez) but my scared ass enjoyed this movie, and I'll definitely watch it again.
There's not too much to complain, just one major flaw so I'll start with that. The plot; it was good, except some major holes that could have been filled with all the baloney they were making to extend that plot point to keep it till later in the narrative.
Okay things I loved... Everything else! Lol the music was suspenseful, and sucked me into the craziness on the screen. It took me a bit to feel connected to our main characters, but once I did, I was all in. I jumped, a lot, but not just because of the couple jump scares, but because of the built suspense, and the beautiful camera pans of nothing.
But in the long run, though the plot does subtract final points, this is definitely a movie I will watch again, and you should go see it in theaters before it disappears.

It tells the tale of Riley, a woman with secrets, who is an FBI officer working on a case that is hitting very close to home. Although she would usually have been taken off the case for being too close, due to who she is (one of the secrets) and what is happening, her supervisor has given her the go-ahead to continue working the case.
I enjoyed reading this book although I personally prefer Lifting The Veil which I have only recently read. I found Sam to be slightly too cocky at the start and his "I know best" attitude. However, once things settled down, I started to like him more.
The story is well executed and thought out. You may or may not guess who the 'bad guy' is but even if you do guess, it doesn't take away any of the enjoyment you get from a well-written story.
Recommended for fans of Contemporary Romance with a pinch of Suspense added.

Black Ties & Lullabies is a contemporary romance...not usually a book I would pick up on my own. I borrowed it from a friend after she won it on First Reads. It was an entertaining, light read, the perfect book to be reading at the start of the school year.
I enjoyed the story & the characters were interesting & well developed. So why 3 stars? Well, the plot itself was very predictable, maybe that's why I'm not so into romance novels. I like a little suspense & I could pretty much see every aspect of this story taking place before it actually did.
