Blue Madonna by Børns
Blue Madonna by Børns
2018 | Alternative, Indie
The second album from the rapidly ascendent synth-pop star Garrett Borns offers more of the same: great ideas constrained in songs that rarely allow them to come to fruition.

"The first album that I ever heard that made me realize that I wanted to make music was by a band called Joy Electric, and the album was called Melody. It’s like a really bizarre fairy tale synth pop from 1993 and they are out of Orange Country, California."

Rolling Stone's 424th greatest album of all time
This is a bit better for a Springsteen album. I still can't take to his voice but the songs are decent, a mix of blues, soft rock and the occasional pop song thrown in (drum machines and synth and everything!).

There's a sex scene in this movie set to a backdrop of 80s sounding synth music, before a transition kicks in that reveals another character in the next room over is in fact playing said music on his weird space flute, and it's the single best transition in cinema history.

Going Grey by The Front Bottoms
Going Grey by The Front Bottoms
2017 | Alternative, Indie
Their plucky DIY aesthetic may be all but gone at this point, but the Front Bottoms have transitioned to the majors gracefully. Certain synth melodies might be a tad too sugary for some, but they bolster the top-notch songwriting

"This is referenced in my song 'I'm An Outlaw': "...an outlaw, burned from vinyl, dimed from cans, peaked to the dome". And that's some crazy, psychedelic, synth-y, weird funk. No offence to Miles, you know, unfortunately he's not with us, but fortunately he's not, because he's the weakest link on that record. At first he's awesome, and then some of his tone, it goes down south once in a while, but all the players, like John McLaughlin and the synth players, and if you listen to the record, especially in headphones, it's all - my theory is - going through modular synthesisers, all the percussion is going through envelope filters, but it's also panning non-stop. If you listen, it's unreal. If you crank it in headphones, it's full speed ahead!"

Woah
Wow, I do not regret pre-ordering this absolute gem. This is by far, one of his best albums, in my opinion, Lots of people believe that things couldn't get better than 2 or Salad Days, but I'm not sure. It feels like the whole Arctic Monkeys debate.

This really gives me lucid Beatles and soul train vibes while still retaining that classic Mac synth sound.

"This series of pieces by Florian Hecker is great. The 30 minute modular synth piece in the book ended by the vocal pieces is a really amazing. I could listen to this piece as one whole composition – I don't actually know his mode of operation, but it works great as a collection. As a modular synth and electronic music guy, the middle movement is just masterful. And he's such an interesting guy, so again, very personalised as far as the way that he works. I don't know at all about what he thinks. In a lot of ways theoretically he's quite impenetrable, I don't know where he's coming from in some instances. He definitely excites me. A lot of his stuff is heavily theoretical. Like the Joan le Barbara movement in the beginning with the voice – it's like the reciting of these philosophical truths or something. And in a way, I would ask him, “Am I supposed to be digesting all of this information or am I supposed to be just letting it wash over me?” That's how I appreciate it."

Excellent game
This game is incredibly fun. The basic concept is something like a cross between the movie Frequency and Stranger Things with a fun synth score. A group of teens end up on a haunted island in a series of time loops and have to use radios to communicate with the ghosts and break free. It's an easy way to lose a few hours, and then play all over again with a few surprises. This is among my top IOS games for sure.

Sometimes it just all comes together for a singer and a song. Evangeline reminds us of Ark, with a similar feel for catchy harmonies and a gorgeous voice, but the guitar pocket here is very old-school, and it sounds like a mix by Daniel Lanois. It just all melts together like a plastic toy in the sun.

Some really deep and percussive bass synth keeps this one right on the money.

Lydia Evangeline is based in Brighton, UK, you might know her as half of acoustic rock duo Wayward Daughter.
