Extremely Well Crafted
A Dark Stain On American History
Detroit is a movie that is hard to watch, but should be seen by everyone. It tells the heart breaking story of a violent raid on a hotel by an overly aggressive and racist group of police officers. The movie pulls no punches in telling this unfortunately true story of how a group of evil bigots got away with murder.
The cast are brilliant at bringing this harrowing tale to life and the technical aspects of the movie are spot on as well. The direction is great, the lighting and sound are phenomenal and the believability of the whole thing, makes it feel all too real.
This movie is shocking and difficult to stomach, but it does what it is designed to do - to show us how much outright discrimination the police force and other officials could get away with during this time in history.
This movie deserves to be seen by all and it will leave you thinking about the events that it portrays for days afterwards.

This book is awesome! There is so much in here for finishing every project, fixing every type of problem you could have, and techniques for making your handknits above the norm. I've learned so much just from flipping through it quickly. I refuse to part with it: It's a permanent addition to my knitting bookshelf.

Images and layout are very visually appealing, and the patterns are beautiful. There are lots of inspiring photographs and referenced projects that can be looked up. There aren't a whole lot of patterns in the book itself, because it's really all about techniques to finish your handknits.

My only complaint is very small and irrelevant to almost everyone: I'm trying to figure out why the whole book is formatted backwards, with a sans serif body text, and serif headers… maybe it's the technical writer/editor inside me, but it irritates me and it sticks out like a sore thumb.

But that's a pretty minor complaint when you think about it.

Recommended for knitters of all levels!

Early L&H sound film finds Stan and Ollie not quite yet in their imperial phase of effortless brilliance, but looking good. They play sailors on shore leave doing what sailors on shore leave do (i.e., attempting to pick up girls). There's a misunderstanding about clothing; Stan and Ollie have to buy a round of drinks despite not having enough money; they cause an impressive pile-up on a boating lake.

You can tell that the formula's not quite there yet, for there is much less emphasis on gleeful property damage and Ollie ending up the victim of Stan's various mishaps than you tend to find in their later films. Instead, there's more reliance on verbal comedy and elements of farce - the first part of the film revolves around a (for 1929) slightly saucy gag about a woman losing her underwear. Suffers a bit from the technical limitations of the period (the lengthy boat sequence at the end is filmed entirely in long shot) but still an ambitious and very funny film.

Six years ago, Cassie Black’s life went wrong when a casino hotel robbery went very wrong. She’s served time in prison and is now ten months into serving parole when she finds herself needing cash, so she takes on one last job, which takes her back to the casino where the job went wrong six years before. Is this job the windfall it appears to be or will it go wrong as well?

I’m being rather vague in my teaser because, like most Michael Connelly books, this is one you need to experience for yourself. I did find the beginning a little slow and technical, but when it took off, it grabbed me and I was along for the ride. This was despite the fact that I didn’t love any of the major characters. I can’t find myself rooting for a criminal, so it wasn’t until we met some characters even worse than Cassie that I found myself rooting for her.
