**ABOUT THE FIRST BOOK IN THE SERIES**
In today’s world, law enforcement agencies across the country rely on forensic tools, DNA testing, and crime labs. But what if that technology was suddenly no longer available? No one in the small, west Texas town of Shadow Ridge knows what took down the power grid, or when it’s going to be back up, but everyone knows exactly where they were the moment it went down. And now, with no electricity, no internet, and no modern technology, the men and women responsible for keeping the town safe are going to have to learn how to fight crime all over again.

When one of the men in charge of storing food for the town of Shadow Ridge is found murdered execution style, it’s up to Jace McQuaid to find the killer. What he discovers is a group of organized raiders who are stealing supplies and selling them on the black market—and the survival of the town depends on stopping them.

Morgan Addison’s estranged brother, Ricky, shows up at her house demanding weapons and confirming her fears that he’s a part of the outlaws. Tensions are raised further when Ricky kidnaps her son to ensure his safe passage out of town. Jace must find a way to save Noah and ensure the survival of Shadow Ridge.

We spared no expense
I do love a good Dinosaur film and generally I'm a big fan of first three films. We've been waiting a long time for the 4th instalment and it didn't disappoint. Bigger, badder with huge action scenes. The park is finally open and booming and it is great to see. The technology in the park brings the series up to date. I like the little touches which refer to the other films, mainly the first one as it's set on the original island 20 years later. Parts of the plot are a little over the top but this can be excused. It feels more like a sequel to the first film in many ways which is a good thing. Grab the popcorn, buckle up and enjoy the ride.

The Techno-Thriller-Comedy that Nobody knew we needed
We unexpectedly loved maniac. It had a lot to say about fantasy vs. reality. The beautiful modern take (extremely loosely) on Don Quixote had a lot to say to the current era that we find ourselves in. A near future almost hopeless setting shines a lot on how we currently attempt to cope with our reality by escaping into our virtual realities. It's especially difficult on millennials who are trying to overcome the arrested development that we've been placed in. We had too much of a good thing, technology, and haven't quite figured out how to balance virtual with analog reality. 9/10 well worth your time!

One of My All-Time Favorite Series
If you like Sci-fi and haven't read the Hyperion series yet, you're doing yourself a disservice. It has wonderful plots that intertwine with each other, vivid imagery, complex characters that are so well developed that you really care what happens to them. The series delves into many topics, such as religion, philosophy, technology, war, and science. As soon as I finished this one, I picked up the other 3 in the series, without even reading a description of them. The final book made me cry. I am just starting over with this first book again, hoping to catch things I missed the first read-through.

I can't say enough good things about Dan Simmons' detailed universe in the Hyperion Cantos.

Just read it, you won't regret it.

Russ Troutt (291 KP) rated The Irishman (2019) in Movies

The Irishman (2019)
2019 | Biography, Crime, Drama
Some people paint houses. Some people paint our screens with incredible performances. I have been looking forward to seeing The Irishman all year and it was even better than I could have hoped for; what a story. Not sure which excited me more, just seeing Pesci back on the screen, De Niro, Pacino, and Pesci all together on screen, or Scorcese back behind the camera(even if I disagree with his opinion on Marvel movies). This movie is packing some serious heat in regards to the supporting cast as well. I was a little nervous when I heard they were using cgi aging technology, but if was very well done. The movie's run time is as long as a mid 70's Lincoln Towncar, but cruises along just as smooth, and just like Jimmy Hoffa's body the time disappears.
