Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare (1991)
Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare (1991)
1991 | Horror
And so here we are, at the 6th and final (in terms of the OG plot line) installament of A Nightmare on Elm Street and the series has finally nosedived into full cartoon territory, and do you know what? I don't hate it.
There are plenty of things about Freddy's Dead that are terrible, from the screenplay, to the characters, to the hammy acting, to the lack of signature gore, to one of the most laughable plot retcons I've ever seen...it should be a dumpster fire, but somehow, it's ludicrous enough to be pretty damn entertaining. It still has some imaginative sequences, even if some are a little over familiar. Freddy's transformation into his final form of being a quip-laden asshat is complete, and although I would rather scary Freddy any day of the week, he manages to make proceedings pretty fun, even if Robert Englund doesn't seem quite as committed as he once was.

It's easy to dunk on Freddy's Dead and I completely understand why it's a lot of people's least favourite entry in the franchise, but it's so wonderfully bizarre, and as a result, I have a huge soft spot for it.

I completely invested myself in the world that Kingdom of Souls was set in: a young girl, Arrah, is the daughter of two powerful Witch Doctors, who themselves come from a long line of Witch Doctors. But when Arrah comes of age, her powers do not come with it. She’s incapable of even the simplest acts of magic. So when children start disappearing, one of them being a friend of hers, Arrah decides to buy magic from a Charlatan. The cost is years from her life for every magical act. But in borrowing her powers, Arrah discovers a terrible secret. That all Witch Doctors, all people, are in grave danger.

I really enjoyed this - it’s completely immersive, and every detail needed to build an alternate world is thought of. The end could have been a bit more succinct and to the point, and I’m always a bit sad when a previously strong female character seems to lose it over a man, but on the whole, I really enjoyed this and will look out for the next in the series on audible (I really enjoyed the audiobook)

Expectations far exceeded!
I won't lie when I went into this series with very low expectations. Reading up on it beforehand it sounded like a dreadful idea, didn't fit with any current canon, and gave the impression it was going to be yet another reboot. How wrong I was!

The first thing you must know is that it is not a reboot, but is a new entry in the video game universe, taking place after Resident Evil: Village.

The lead cast all perform their parts perfectly, and if you're a real Resident Evil fan, the story will blow your mind.

The only things that really let it down are the quality of CGI, which I can say without any exaggeration, at points share the same quality with Sharknado.

The other thing that lets the show down is the acting for most minor characters. As I said, the lead cast were for the most part excellent, but at many points the terrible acting of a minor character will detract from an entire scene.

Overall though, a wonderfully pleasant surprise!

Enjoy!

You can't see them. But they can see you.

This forest isn't charted on any map. Every car breaks down at its treeline. Mina's is no different. Left stranded, she is forced into the dark woodland only to find a woman shouting, urging Mina to run to a concrete bunker. As the door slams behind her, the building is besieged by screams.

Mina finds herself in a room with a wall of glass, and an electric light that activates at nightfall, when the Watchers come above ground. These creatures emerge to observe their captive humans and terrible things happen to anyone who doesn't reach the bunker in time.

Afraid and trapped among strangers, Mina is desperate for answers. Who are the Watchers, and why are they keeping the humans imprisoned, keen to watch their every move?

It was a decent read. A really creepy creature feature. It is quite similar to a lot of these sorts of books that I’ve read and nothing really stood out as different really but still an enjoyable read.
