This was a typical Grisham quick read. It builds on the first book, but focuses mainly on Bruce. We see little of Mercer, a main character in book one, which was unfortunate. But Bruce is a blustery star, who can easily dominate both in his life and a novel. He has a huge group of friends, literary and "normal" alike. One is Nelson Kerr, a former lawyer with a big firm in San Francisco. He ratted out a client, a defense contractor who was illegally selling high-tech military stuff to the "bad guys." Nelson settled his case and fled to the island after a divorce. He's been working on another book and we learn quickly that his work may have gotten him killed.

It's easy to feel the storm and its tension through Grisham's picturesque writing. Leo hits quickly and the devastation that follows is bad. The post-hurricane feeling on a nearly abandoned Camino Island seems oddly aligned to the pandemic--at least when I read this in May--or it's easy to read that sense into everything I read.

Still, despite the hurricane and the murder and other various killings, this is actually a fun read. Grisham gives us an engaging mystery, and I love his "good versus evil" formula. It always works so well for him and this is one of his breezier presentations. While there isn't much depth, it's a fast read with interesting characters and a snappy mystery. 3.5 stars.

With Silent Screams ( Hellequin book 3)
By Steve McHugh

Once read a review will be written via Smashbomb and link posted in comments

His name is Nathan Garrett, but he's also known as Hellequin. And murdering one of his friends and trying to blow him up is a good way to get this centuries-old sorcerer's full attention... An old friend's dead body, a cryptic note, and an explosion that almost costs him his own life propel Nate headfirst into a mystery involving a new threat from an old foe. Now he must piece together the connections between a grisly series of tattooed murder victims, an imprisoned madman, a mysterious alchemist, and a deranged plot to usurp the throne of the hidden realm of Shadow Falls, rival to the power of Avalon.

Can Nate avert the coming slaughter, or will he become the latest to fall in this clandestine war?

With the story careening between modern-day New York and Ontario and 1977 Maine, With Silent Screams continues the gritty and action-packed mix of urban fantasy and ancient mythology that mark Steve McHugh's popular Hellequin Chronicles.

This is becoming one of my favourite series and they are getting better with every book! This is book 3 and the best one yet it’s so intricate without being overbearing. I love Nate and his many friends figures from real history and fictional. I could read these over and over. Brilliant series!

The Black Swan series is a set of books that you really should read in the reading order, not out of sequence. By doing this, you will get swept up into a world of strong, protective, drool-worthy males. Their female counterparts are also strong, protective, ok so maybe not drool-worthy to me, they sure are gorgeous! The stories lead into one another and the characters become more in-depth.

The humour in these books has always had me laughing out loud but some in this one have had my husband asking just what is so funny! One of the last scenes that is written in this book, is so beautifully done that I had tears in my eyes and had to go back and re-read. I have loved being with these characters as they have grown and changed; some changes being more noticeable than others (Deliverance and Grey). Others just seem to grow more comfortable with themselves and their role in life (Glen). Other characters have their lives changed in one way or another and you see how they adapt. This book is an excellent read and the series as a whole continues to delight.

So, that's what you get with the Black Swan - and if you haven't read the first one yet (which is free), why not?

PSYCHO SHIFTERS is the first in the Cruel Shifterverse series and, as the titles of the book and series suggest, this is not a warm and fluffy book! What it is, is a gripping and intriguing story, from the alpha-holes to mysterious portents in the Sacred Lake.

Sadie has had a hard life, frequently whipped with a belt. So long as it protects her sister, she's okay with it. Well, not okay, exactly, but you know what I mean. A series of events lead her to being left alone at a training centre where no one thinks pretty much of her, including the other alphas she's supposed to be with.

Each of the other alpha's have distinct personalities and react to her presence in their own delightful ways. We find out more about Jax and Cobra than we do Ascher, which is a story all by itself.

There are plenty of raunchy moments here so be prepared. Also, it doesn't skimp on violence, which is perfect for this book.

It does end on a cliffhanger, so consider yourself warned. Poor Ascher! I can't wait to see where we go next. Definitely recommended by me.
