A thought provoking, dystopian world.

Our planet, inhabitable and dying. Population Zero pushes you to think about the future, about how our actions have consequences that reach far beyond our own front yard.
It made me feel sad and had me thinking of how easily things can change.
I'll be honest, none of the possible worlds described held any appeal at all. None of them hold hope of any type of survival but all of them get you to question your actions in the here and now.

An ideal young adult read to open up discussions about the future of our planet.

Every Time I Die (2019)
Every Time I Die (2019)
2019 | Thriller
Every Time I Die does have a bit of a slow start as we are introduced to Sam and his friends and he always seems to be the odd one out, there is something that is just not right with Sam, not in a bad way but in a way that even Sam isn’t sure about himself, the opening of the movie with Sam waking up and the first person camera view is a little strange, but it works very well and certainly sets you on the path that this film is going to be unusual and thought-provoking.

True Detective vibe
Slow burn Thriller
A good interesting serial killer thriller that is a slow burn and thought provoking. Definitely a bit different from the normal direction of this genre, but that only comes apparent about half way through. If you like True Detective you should enjoy this but it's definitely not an open and shut case of cat and mouse you normally find with this genre. It's just the ending which is good but also a bit unfulfilling that is a slight let down. The cast keep your interest though especially Jared Leto as the creepy suspect.

Isabelle LaFayette attempts but fails, to end her own life in what her mother calls a selfish act. Her suicide attempt haunts her, along with her other past regrets and the inability to forgive herself.

Jack Riley comes into Isabelle’s life and becomes her first love. He makes her feel alive, but she cruelly pushes him away, mistakenly believing that she doesn't deserve to be happy. Can she find the strength to confront her pain and be released from her troublesome past?

Isabelle needs to break the rules that have been imprisoning her. It is the only way for her to move on and piece her heart back together again.

Izzy, as she is known to her friends, is an extremely likeable character and I could really empathise with her. I thought this book was very insightful and thought-provoking. Although I thought that some of the dialogue between Izzy and her new beau, Nick Sterling, was a little repetitive, I found it a very enjoyable read, The author's writing has depth and the ending was very good.

There is a reason why this book won the Man Booker Prize 2019 (jointly with Margaret Atwood’s The Testaments). It’s perfection, in my opinion.

This is written in 12 chapters, each featuring a named character. They’re Black (one unknowingly so), British (although one no longer lives in the UK and thinks of herself as American) and Female (and one no longer identifies as female). They’re all different ages and from different backgrounds, but some are linked, and these characters are linked in grouped chapters.

I loved the writing style - a kind of prose poetry - with a lack of capital letters and punctuation. After a couple of pages of acclimatisation, it became a really fluid read - like a thought process.

I really enjoyed reading about their different lifestyles, different origins and where their lives took them.

A really satisfying, thought provoking read.
