David McK (3623 KP) rated Tales of the Jedi in TV
Nov 20, 2022 (Updated Nov 20, 2022)
Disney's latest (at the time of writing) entry in the Star Wars canon, this is a series of shorts - all about 15, 20 minutes long or so - that primarily follows two Jedi in particular (Dooku and Ahsoka), and so are all set prior to the events of the original trilogy.
Some of the animation is stunning, yes, but it's also the case that some of the shorts are better than others.

Wilder (Birds of a Feather #1) by Lena North
Wilder is the first book in the Birds of a Feather series, and it starts many, MANY years after The Dreughan Trilogy. Wilder has just lost her beloved grandfather and also learns more about her family. Some surprises were in store for her, and she struggles to deal with them all. Funnily enough, the biggest surprise was easy for her. The hardest was dealing with people she thought she knew, and finding out they had a whole other life that didn't involve her. With a whole new family to contend with, plus a love interest, there is a lot going on for Wilder.
First of all, the thing that I ADORED in this book was the appearance of Vilda, Sannah, and Troy! I loved how they made their appearance, and their appearances after. For me, it helped to wrap up their trilogy, and I loved every single time they were mentioned.
There is plenty of action in this story, and it is different from The Dreughan Trilogy. For a start, it is set in a contemporary time, not medieval. A whole new bunch of characters and abilities light the way, giving this series a great introduction in a well written story. There are some editing and grammatical errors, but nothing that spoilt my enjoyment of the story.
A great beginning to the series, and I can't wait to continue. Definitely recommended by me.

The Bandersnatch (199 KP) rated The Hobbit Trilogy (2015) in Movies
Nov 7, 2019
In Decembers of 2012, 2013 and 2014 the three movies of The Hobbit came out, The Hobbit: an unexpected journey, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug and The Hobbit: Battle of the Five armies forming The Hobbit Trilogy. Metro-Goldwyn-Mayor and Newline Cinema each released part of the trilogy with Director Peter Jackson at the helm (he directed The Lord of the Rings trilogy too). The movies follow the book but have been expanded to include extra material from the Lord of the Rings appendices as well as having recurring characters from the Lord of the Rings Movies such as Gandalf (Sir Ian McKellen), Frodo Baggins (Elijah wood), Legolas (Orlando Bloom), Lord Elrond (Hugo Weaving), lady Galadriel (Cate Blanchett), Gollom/Smegol (Andy Sirkis) and Saruman (Sir Christopher Lee 1922-2015).
In my opinion whilst the movies were very good having pretty much been handled by the team who shot and produced The Lord of the Rings. It felt sort of stretched, I'm pretty sure they could have gotten away with having two movies maybe even just the one if they cut some of the extra material away. The Hobbit in my eyes was essentially its own story and having the extra material padding it up to three movies-whilst useful and giving us a glimpse of the world at large just clumped it a bit. Other than that it was a good set of movies and I'm grateful that the team behind the Lord of the Rings was behind these ones, kept a good thread of continuity going.

Great Action scenes (2 more)
Awesome Sfx
Ties in well with the other films
A new lease of life for the Star Wars saga
Another great Star Wars film that links nicely with A new hope. Probably the best film I saw last year and I watched a lot of films. To me it even betters Force Awakens and feels like a new film. Whereas Force Awakens felt more like a retread of ideas from the original trilogy.
Chris Hooker (419 KP) rated Bride of a Bygone War (Beirut Trilogy, #2) in Books
Jan 12, 2018
[Preston Fleming] has quickly become one of my favorite authors. With [Bride of a Bygone War] he hits another home run. The continuing action and intrigue of Beirut in the 1980's is conveyed in a fast paced yet humanistic manner.
Any fan of spy thrillers or the action adventure genre definitely needs to check [Mr. Fleming] out. I will be awaiting the third installment of the [Beirut Trilogy] and any more works by this exciting author.

One of the weaker Bond films
A very good action film continuing right on from Casino Royale. Plenty of action, chases and explosions. Has a certain Bourne Trilogy feel to a lot of the stunts and fights. The Bond films now are more gritty, raw without the tongue in cheek humour of the past films. One for all out action entertainment but not the best story for a Bond film.

Great dystopian world
I read this book some years ago, but it's one of those that kind of sticks with you. Especially in the crazy, chaotic world that we live in now, since around November 2016. This is the beginning of a dystopian trilogy that spawned a 4 part movie saga starring Jennifer Lawrence. If you haven't seen the movies, you should. They are pretty great and so are the books.

War is bad mmkay?
The idea behind The Heroes was good, the battle between the supposedly savage Northmen and the civilised, yet incompetent imperial troops. Abercrombie can sure write an excellent battle scene, and some superbly crafted characters, on both sides.
Altogether though I felt this book a little dragged out, and the whole "war is pointless" message a little forced home.
Of the 3 follow-on books from the main trilogy this is my least favourite.
