David McK (3632 KP) rated The Sixth Sense (1999) in Movies
Feb 12, 2023
"I see dead people ..."
So, this film is now nearly 25 years old.
I'd never seen it.
That was mainly because I'd had the twist spoilt for me when it first came out: I was at university, doing a course on film and fiction circa 2000, and the lecturer came out with "and so, as we all now know ..." (I didn't) ".. the twist in the film is that ..."
So, yeah, I saw little point in watching it after that.
I *had* seen a few of M Night Shyamalan other films that were released later ("Signs", "Unbreakable" or "The Happening", for instance), but never really thought they were anything above average.
None the less, I decided - when I came across this on Disney+ - that it was time to go right back to 1999, right back to before Shyamalan became known for his twists, just to see if the movie held up.
It did.
Mostly.

Chris Hooker (419 KP) rated Empress of the World (Battle Hall Davies, #1) in Books

While at camp for gifted kids Nic meets Battle. They both like guys but fall for each other. Is love worth losing friendship
This was a cute book about trying to figure out who you are and the pitfalls along the way. This can be especially hard for gay kids since society tells you it is wrong. Throughout this book all the characters grew and changed. It was typical teenage drama with a gay twist.

Haley Mathiot (9 KP) rated Afterward in Books

Excellent narration, beautiful story and complex character development, and a surprising twist near the end of the book.
This book deals with some heavy psychological stuff, and really got me thinking. I was very involved in the characters lives and development, and I was very satisfied with the way the story ended. As long as you can handle some slightly intense scenes, any fan of thrillers and psychological stories will enjoy this book!

The Craggus (360 KP) rated Happy Death Day 2U (2019) in Movies
Mar 5, 2019
Happy Death Day 2 U (2019) brings us a happy return to the big screen for Jessica Rothe. #Review
Planting its tongue firmly in cheek, the sequel to 2017’s delightfully peppy “Happy Death Day” takes the timey-wimey slasher story and gives it a decidedly sci-fi twist that sees it play out like an over-caffeinated mash-up of “Back To The Future Part II” and “Russian Doll”...

Dean (6927 KP) rated My Bloody Valentine 3-D (2009) in Movies
Mar 10, 2018
A pretty average slasher film and definitely based around the 3-D, it uses as many scenes as it can for this effect. I only saw it on DVD but you can just tell what scenes, effects were done for the 3-D parts. Very bloody and gory in places, with a slight twist if you can call it that. Overall pretty good but no doubt more fun in 3-D mode.
Heather Cranmer (2721 KP) rated The Dead-Tossed Waves (The Forest of Hands and Teeth, #2) in Books
Jun 7, 2018
I must admit that I didn't think this book would be better than The Forest of Hands and Teeth, but it was so much better!! It starts out even more slow than the first book and takes longer than the first book to get going, but once it does, it's so so good!! I love the plot twist in this concerning Gabry. I am definitely looking forward to the next book in the series =)
As an avid reader of novels I've found myself persistently let down with YA novels and I thought the same of Divergent before I had even read it. I got a sample and downloaded the book and finished it in under ten hours. Couldn't put it down. Very good YA novel and an interesting twist on a dystopia. Don't think I will be judging a book by its cover any time soon again

Emma
Peculiarly alright
I did kinda get over hyped for this book which was probably why I didn't enjoy it as much as I could have.
Didn't expect the Wight thing, we needed more Olive. Emma annoyed me mostly. I did genuinely get a little creeped out by the hallowgasts.
Photos are a unique touch and I thoroughly enjoyed seeing them.
Probably won't read the others though.

I can remember being absolutely shocked and disturbed at this film when I first watched it. I did not see the twist coming at all. It doesn’t have the same impact now obviously but it is still a great film. This would’ve been a ten if there had been a clear motive for his retribution on Mills but I feel that part was hazy, that’s the only bit that spoilt it for me.
Sonofdel (6291 KP) rated Acts Of Vengeance (2017) in Movies
Nov 9, 2018
Nice twist on the usual action films
A film about a smart mouthed defence lawyer whose wife and daughter are murdered. Its a revenge thriller with a difference. Instead of shouting his mouth off Antonia Banderas vows to remain silent until the killer or killers are brought to justice. No army training or previous fighting experience, just a lawyer wanting revenge. A good supporting cast makes this well worth a watch.
