Jemaine Clement recommended Rushmore (1998) in Movies (curated)

"Rushmore. That must come up a lot. But it’s funny, and I know that the movie Harold and Maude is probably a big influence on that; but I hadn’t seen that when I saw Rushmore. I hadn’t seen anything like it. It’s really funny. I think Wes Anderson is really hilarious and most people don’t notice, because of the style of the film. Grand Budapest Hotel, to me, was the funniest film of the year, but people saw it as an art film. I think I related to Max as well, because I grew up poor like he did, and when I went to University I did feel like I was kind of pretending of fitting in this world. I related to Max."

Aka Alright Now, only watched because Cobie Smulders is very good in @Stumptown and thought this might be funny. Really not sure how this even got released! It's really bad barely a plot to it, the script doesn't have much to it. It's not funny, it feels really amateurish alround. The camera work is very shaky like it was shot on a handheld camcorder. It doesn't really make sense. A fading popstar decides to enroll at a university after breaking up with her band who were good 20 years ago. Slight Rom-com angle to it as well that also just doesn't fit in. Skip this you'll be glad.

This is a pretty easy read, though a little slow at times. If you like getting caught up in the somewhat twisted existences of others, you will probably enjoy this one. It covers the trio's lives from university and graduation up to the reunion--and then discusses what happens after they, well, reunite. So there's no big story here, just the tale of three friends and the stories and secrets they share. But it's an interesting read, if not a bit melodramatic at times.

You may have to suspend some disbelief at various points, but I did think it was a good portrait of friendship overall. I found it to be a satisfying tale of relationships, and I certainly felt a part of everyone's lives. 3.5 stars.
