"Like many of these, this movie qualifies for me partly because it was an unexpected thrill when I first saw it in the early seventies. I’m neither much a Tony Curtis nor a Burt Lancaster fan, and I’d never heard of Alexander Mackendrick (he made half his relatively few films, including The Man in the White Suit and The Ladykillers, in the UK; a later, strong U.S. job was A High Wind in Jamaica). Sweet Smell of Success, again, too, is quasi-noir. It’s a black-and-white, urban, small film about people’s bad luck and bad character, set in the Broadway cubicles and show-biz restaurants of New York’s sleazy show-world underbelly. Despite my prior relative indifference to the actors in it, they’re perfectly cast—against their standard types—in this, and do terrific jobs, and the script, by the highly skilled and literate Ernest Lehman and Clifford Odets, is spectacular. James Wong Howe shot the cold-ass thing."

As a romance reader, I love any hint of romance between the characters in books and in this, after what happened between Gin and Donovan in the first book, my hopes soared. But with it being Urban Fantasy, romance isn't really a major plotline in it.

The more I read the more I understood that things probably weren't going to work out well between these two. A (semi) retired assassin and the only un-crooked cop in the force? Hmm...

But lo and behold we have a new love interest! So I'm still pretty happy.

As for the rest of the story, I got dragged into it. I really wanted Gin to kick everyone's arses and come out on top and although it got a little dicey in places she did!

I'm off to start book 3 to read what she's going to get up to next (and hopefully she'll get a little hot and heavy with the new guy!)

I grew up in a time and place where it was very real to have concern about a pair of kicks being stolen from you by force, or even death. Surely my thoughts on this movie are reflective of that.

Brandon is a boy who is struggling to completely fit in anywhere in his world. He has a couple of loyal friends, but struggles to understand his place in society. He believes that the ultimate pair of Air Jordan 1's will help solve all the issues he carries internally.

After copping a pair out of the back of a van, he is promptly beaten at gunpoint and they are stolen by a known heavy in his urban neighborhood. The rest of the movie essentially involves his efforts to return the shoes to his feet and the lengths that he is willing to go (and the sacrifices he's willing to make) to make that a reality.
