ClareR (6129 KP) rated Daisy Belle: Swimming Champion of the World in Books
Apr 28, 2019
An independent woman in a time where it was frowned upon
This is a lovely story of a female swimmer in Victorian times: Daisy Belle. A child, and later a woman, who very much knows what she wants: to be in the water, swimming and competing. I honestly got the impression that she would stay in the water if she could. We see some of the constraints of the time: women were ruled by their fathers and husbands, but we also see that women were starting to assert their independence wherever they could. And for Daisy, this was in the water.
I believe a lot of the research for this story was set around some very well known Victorian female swimmers. These women were performers, performing feats of daring and endurance, something that men thought them incapable of. Daisy proves this theory wrong.
There was a point in the story where I thought all was lost for Daisy, but it all comes good in the end, much to my relief. I really liked her. Some of the men, apart from her brother, were not particularly nice people.
In all, a really good read - I thoroughly enjoyed it!

MusicCritics (472 KP) rated Concrete And Gold by Foo Fighters in Music
Oct 3, 2017
Concrete and Gold is an apt title. The hard rock is still there but finally there’s a bit of a shimmer and glow, something the band absolutely needed lest they continue treading water. It’s a career-capper as unexpected as it is welcome.

Chris Hooker (419 KP) rated Girl Walking Backwards in Books

Why do we always fall for the wrong girl? Probably because we do not know any better. That is what most of this book is about. Skye is a typical teenage character who is surrounded by typical teenage characters. The plot is typical but still good. This wasn't a blow me out of the water type book but it was definately readable.

Great comedy written by Simon Pegg and Nick Frost; all of the references were spot on. Seth Rogen was hilarious as Paul.
I'm editing this review because I just rewatched this movie yesterday evening. When a 7 year old movie that you've seen numerous times still makes you snort-laugh water through your nose, you know you've got a funny movie.

Highly entertaining Stallone Vehicle that almost has the show stolen from under him by a perfect performance of crazy from Wesley Snipes.
This future fish out of water action movie has an old formula and at times cheesy dialogue but the comedy element keeps it interesting, an underrated and ofter berated 90's actioner that is great fun to rewatch!

It is not a very long film but brilliant. It starts with the crash (sorry water landing) and concentrates on the aftermath and where to lay the blame. Sully really was a hero and it was lovely to see how during the investigation he showed them not to rely on computers as everyone does now but to incorporate the human factor.
