"I could pick almost any of her novels—Deep Water would be another. This one is typically masterful in the way it measures out information and suggestion, laced with a growing sense of dread. And a great title."

"Nick Kroll, the comedian, asked if I had read this—it’s a children’s book and it’s very lovely. For some reason water and mermaids is something I keep writing about, and this book touches on the same themes."

"Chinatown. It’s the quintessential LA story and it explains how the Department of Water and Power got into place. It’s just all these dark themes with such great period nostalgia. It haunts you. It’s become part of the lexicon."

Interesting to see that there are two competing versions of The Shape of Water on the site, one with an 8.1, one with an 8.8. Pretty sure I watched the 8.8 version. I wonder which one's going to win the Oscars?

"A few years ago when I was teaching a course at Berkeley I reread A Farewell to Arms and fell right back into those sentences. I mean they’re perfect sentences. Very direct sentences, smooth rivers, clear water over granite, no sinkholes"

Build your city as you see fit, but remember you can only place buildings next to roads. Some buildings like houses, shops and factories generate income, while others such as water towers, parks and roads cost money to maintain.
