Hazel (2934 KP) rated Redemption Point (Crimson Lake #2) in Books
Mar 11, 2018
This is a sequel to Crimson Lake; a book I gave 4 stars; this one also gets 4 stars. I really recommend you read Crimson Lake before reading this otherwise you will not get the really important background to the 2 main characters, Ted and Amanda and, I feel, that is essential to get everything out of this story and an understanding of these 2 very different and intriguing characters.
The story has 2 main facets. The first being the murder of two young people and the second of Ted's attempts to clear his name of the violent attack on a young girl. Both parts fit together really well as does the unlikely partnership of Ted and Amanda and the relationship between Ted and his geese!
Well written; funny and sad with a story that will make you shout at it at times and laugh out loud at others, Redemption Point and its predecessor are books I'm glad I didn't miss out on and I would highly recommend.
Thanks go to Ellie Gibbons, Marketing Manager at Cornerstone - Penguin Random House UK and the author, Candice Fox for my copy in return for an honest review.

The cast (1 more)
Genuinely laugh out loud funny in parts
Surprisingly Good
Full disclaimer: I've never seen the Robin Williams's version of Jumanji.
This is another of those films that we've put on for "family time", I've had my knitting in my lap and my laptop or phone next to me ready to keep me occupied, and I've ended up being the one laughing loudest and sitting mouth agape in the exciting parts.
It was a genuinely funny film, some good slapstick moments for the younger ones and some more grown-up jokes for the adults. The cast worked really well together; they could have completely over-played their "real" personas in their computer game avatar parts, but it was actually very well done.
I would heartily recommend this to anyone looking for a film the whole family can enjoy - even if any of the actors aren't really your cup of tea, because I think they were all great in this - and one I would happily watch again. Even if my 5-year old has developed a weird obsession with Dwayne Johnson's muscles!!

A very sweet read
I’d been looking for something lighthearted and easy to read, and found this stored away on my kindle and figured it was just the read I was looking for. I could not have been more right.
This is a heartwarming and absolutely lovely read about 3 women wanting to lose weight. It’s very well written and so engaging. All 3 of the main characters are well developed and down to earth, and I’d dare any woman reading this not to connect with all of them in some way or another. I spotted a bit of me in all of them which made it such a delight to read. The plot may be slightly predictable, but this is one of those books where it doesn’t matter. In fact, when I reached the end I actually wanted to carry on, it was that entertaining. It’s funny, emotional and an all round engaging read. I also found it very inspirational and based around a subject very close to home (my New Years Resolution), and despite being fictional it really has motivated me to sort out my own life.

David McK (3623 KP) rated Aftermath (Star Wars: Aftermath, #1) in Books

It must be strange being in [a: Chuck Wendig|17152|Chuck Wendig|https://d.gr-assets.com/authors/1294919586p2/17152.jpg]'s shoes when he was given the green-light to write this novel.
Not so much for what the novel is (a Star Wars book), but for what it isn't (the first in the 'new' non-EU canon).
I imagine there would have been both a feeling of freedom in that he is no longer tied down to making sure everything 'fits', as well as a feeling of responsibility as some of that old EU stuff was quite well regarded.
Regardless, this is set after the events of 'Return of the Jedi', but before the new 'The Force Awakens', and is the first in a series of novels leading up to that movie that should (hopefully) fill in the gaps in that movie. While Luke didn't make an appearance in this, there are some old returning characters: most noticeably Wedge Antilles, who provides the MacGuffin that gets the whole plot rolling!
It may not be the best Star Wars book I've read (sorry), but it does do a serviceable job in getting the ball rolling again.

Merissa (13389 KP) rated Shattered Secrets (Book of Red #1) in Books
Dec 17, 2018
I received an ARC from the author in exchange for a fair and honest review.
Everything about you has been kept a secret for 17 years. Then one after another the secrets come crashing down around your ears and demand to recognised. What would you do and how would you react? This is what Abby has to ask herself as she deals with being kidnapped after a date gone wrong.
There is enough confusion, twists, turns, trust issues as well as what might be a slightly dodgy advice giving book to make this book absolutely absorbing. Who should Abby trust and who should she keep at a distance. I can't tell you that because I was second guessing all the way through and something would happen to change my mind again and again.
This book is brilliantly written, with a well thought out plot line and a pace to match. The characters will interest and intrigue and keep you turning the pages. Definitely recommended for all Paranormal / Fantasy readers out there and it is YA so there is nothing there that shouldn't be.

Phil Leader (619 KP) rated Dragonsinger (Pern: Harper Hall, #2) in Books
Nov 12, 2019
Dragonsinger is the second of the Harper Hall books and continues the story of singer Menolly as she becomes an established and accomplished harper on the world of Pern.
As usual with the Pern novels the way that ordinary life fits together is well described and the characters McCaffrey uses here are very well developed and incredibly three dimensional. It's a world that almost seems close enough to touch.
As with Dragonsong, having a book that does not focus on the rarified world of the dragonriders is refreshing showing a different take on the world, even if it is still a position of privilege in one of the most respected professions on the world.
However for me this does suffer the same weakness of the other books that are in essence a periphery to the dragon-centric stories: they don't move the overall story arc forward and as such are a pleasant enough read but ultimately not as satisfying as some of the other books. And anyone who finds characters being relentlessly talented and nice to each other grating won't appreciate a lot of the story. Still a good read though.
