Second entry in Simon Scarrow's now so-called 'Berlin wartime thriller series (after Blackout), again following Criminal Inspector Horst Schenke of the Kripo (criminal police) as he first investigates the murder (as the wife of the doctor believes) - or was it suicide? (been already ruled as such) - of a SS doctor, before being told in no uncertain terms to leave it alone.

He is then pulled into an investigation of a separate murder (again, is it such? The parents believe so, but the state does not) of a child which, as events transpire, seems to have more and more to do with the death of the SS doctor.

So I could see from roughly a third of the way into this where it was going. And it is horrifying that these events - well, maybe not *these* exact events, but very very similar ones - took place routinely in 1940 Nazi Germany.

Learn from history.

So it will never be repeated.

Amazing Fighter jet scenes (1 more)
Very nostalgic
You can be my wing man anytime
So after being put back a while we finally get to see the Top Gun sequel. I saw it in 4dx which really adds to the fighter jet scenes.
Plot wise it treads a very similar path to the original film, opening is almost identical. Maverick is back to train some past Top Gun graduates for a very dangerous mission. One of the team is Rooster, the son of Goose from the original.
There is plenty of nostalgic moments that are reminiscent of scenes and things from the original film. Good to see Iceman have a role as well. The biggest draw though is the fighter jet scenes. The original stood out and wasn't bettered for the air combat action. This probably improves on fighter jet scenes with a better variety of shots and view points. Top Gun is the perfect film for the big screen.

Family Lore focuses on the Marie sisters: Matilda, Flor, Pastor and Camille, and two of their daughters, Ona and Yadi. Some of these women have special abilities, and for Flor, that is being able to predict when someone is going to die. So there is great consternation when she decides to hold a living wake.

Ona is an anthropologist and decides to interview the women in her family to find out about their origins: the older sisters come from the Dominican Republic, and their lives there were very different to those of their children.

This is a family with a lot going on! If you like family dramas, then you would be just the reader for this book. There’s a lot about the different relationships between the characters, marriages, unfaithfulness, low self esteem, maternal love, fertility problems, cultural differences, family arguments and resilience.

It’s beautifully written - Acevedo is a poet as well - and all the characters really do have their own voices in this wide-sweeping novel.

There was so much sadness and trauma woven all through this book. Abandonment issues, touch aversion, physical abuse, and mental. It was so sad and I need a second one from the author that lets me know Noor and Sal lived happily ever after.

I listened to the audiobook and the cast did an amazing job with all the voices and being filled with emotions. The ending with all the resources listed for readers who might be suffering from abuse also had me in tears. They did an amazing job at showing the struggles that immigrants can go through at home and at school. There were triggers warnings included in the beginning as well to warn those that might be sensitive to certain content.

I can't recommend this read/listen enough and def recommend this book for someone looking for a good cry with a very happy ever after for the two main characters with a horrible ending for the villainy character that you gotta love!
