Jojo Rabbit (2019)

After seeing the trailer for this I was very skeptical. I wondered how Hitler during Nazi Germany times could possibly be funny, even in satire. Truth be told, the only reason I got past that stage was because the movie stars Sam Rockwell, and I'm a sucker for him.

I stand corrected on my initial assessment.

Jojo Rabbit is a hilarious take on the life of a child during Nazi reign in Germany. Adolf Hitler is represented as an imaginary friend of a young man who is coming into his own. I know, this seems wicked dark and awful at the same time. But the way that it's approached by the film makers creates an environment that educates and enlightens to the times that were lived by the people of Germany while making it a bit lighter so that it doesn't weigh down all of your emotions to the point of not being able to carry them.

There are some very serious moments and I wouldn't recommend watching with young children (that should be a given if you watched the trailer). However, it is well worth a watch, or even a second. The acting alone is worth a second look.

Autumn is happy running Ten Again, the gaming store she owns in the small Wisconsin college town where she grew up. Things are going well until one of the regular gamers in the store dies in the mall. Things quickly turn on Autumn and the rest of the gamers, with some of them in particular in the police’s spotlight. But Autumn doesn’t think her gamers, who have become her friends, could really be killers. Can she prove it?

While I’m not much of a gamer, this book still sounded like lots of fun, and I was right. There are some references to geeky things, most of which I got, but if you don’t get the reference, it shouldn’t interfere with your enjoyment of the book. That’s because the mystery is strong, with lots of events and clues to keep the pages turning until we reach the logical and suspenseful climax. The characters are wonderful, and I love how much they care for each other. I also appreciated Autumn’s debates about being involved in the investigation. It felt realistic when she would try to get out before something pulled her back in. I do wish Autumn swore a little less, but that’s my only complaint about this fun debut.

Park Bong-pal can see ghosts, he uses this ability to make money as an exorcist. On one of his jobs he meets Kim Hyeon-ji, a ghost who can't remember her own death. Park Bong- pal agrees to help Kim Hyeon-ji find out about her past if she helps him exorcise the evil ghost but Kim Hyeon-ji isn't the only one with a mysterious past and Park Bong-pal's might just kill both of them.
Bring it on, Ghost is a Korean, horror, romance, comedy romance series on Netflix. Each episode is a 'Monster of the week' type of story with also builds up the story of Park Bong-pal and how he gained the ability to see ghosts and what it means to his future.
The horror aspect of the series is quite tame, some of the ghosts are creepy but the show focus's on Park Bong-pal and Kim Hyeon-ji's relationship and works on building up the over aching series story line.
Being about ghosts there are the occasional episodes that touch on suicide and child abuse but these are handled well and manly focus on the effect such actions have on the survives and are not glorified or used for shock value.

"This is a record I discovered long after the fact, but it’s become one of my favorite albums of all time. I love it even more because it comes from that magical late ‘80s period when there was so much amazing music being made. It’s like other records I’ve chosen because it has its own sound that permeates every track on the record. A while back, I treated myself to an original pressing of this. It was one of the few times in my life I have actually bought one of the albums that hang on the wall of a record store rather than in the racks! It was expensive at the time, I think around £30, but when I think about how many rounds of drinks I bought that cost more than that, it feels like money well spent. This is Larry Heard, the bedroom genius; it’s such a distilled version of his talents. And as such, I found it really inspirational when I started to want to make my own electronic music. I record under the name GLOK and Mr. Fingers is one of my main influences. My favorites are ‘Can You Feel It’ and ‘Washing Machine,’ but it’s all excellent."

"Run-D.M.C came out and it was like some serious gangster shit: bomber jackets and Kangols [laughs]. They were just some serious hood shit and they pushed the limits as far as they possibly could at that time. They laid the building blocks for everything that was to come in that era and for everything where we are right now. It felt so special being able to see that for the first time: I was there at the birth of it and I was watching the first round of this shit build up and up. Their live performances also helped Cypress Hill. We got confidence on stage by originally going to local shows in New York City – Run-D.M.C and the like. All the really big shows too – we'd see 'Ministry' and learn from them as well as all the local acts in the city. I saw bands like Ministry and Run-D.M.C on stage very early on in the game and I drew inspiration [and confidence] from a lot of their live shows and these undoubtedly helped our own future live performances. It was very exciting to be a part of this scene at that time and to see Run-D.M.C with such unbelievable raw power at that time."
