Kristy H (1252 KP) rated The Wrong Family in Books
Mar 11, 2021
A wild and wacky thriller
Juno, a former therapist, moves in with Winnie and Nigel Crouch because she thinks the family is nearly perfect. They appear a loving couple who adore their teenage son, Sam. But once she's living in their picture perfect house, Juno realizes all isn't as it seems. And when she overhears a conversation between the couple that she cannot forget, she gets involved... setting in motion a string of events that she cannot undo.
"Humans had a way of uprooting happiness. They found flaws in it, picked at it until the whole system unraveled."
Well, this was an interesting read, to say the least. It had the odd distinction of being both predictable in many ways yet really weird and crazy. It's a fast read and while there's nothing really amazing here, it was certainly good for a crazy (!) twist or two. I didn't care for any of the characters--Winnie, Juno, or Nigel--and most of my sympathies stayed with poor Sam, who had to deal with all these wacky adults in his life. There's a lot of drama and truly, the plot is bizarre and wild. Which is definitely fun at times and a bit too much at others.
Overall, this is a dark read with an insane plot and characters that aren't exactly endearing. It's a quick read that stressed me out and probably won't stick with me long, but was enjoyable enough for a few days. 3 stars.

"You're Welcome" >>> "How Far I'll Go", I said what I said š¤·āāļø
Another overly-familiar, word-for-word rehash of *all* the exact same clichĆ©s from the Disney Machine with no real profundity or nuance to back up the convention. I mean even the title character the movie is named after has about as much depth as a piece of blank construction paper. That being said however, this is - what I can only describe as - terminally cute. In spite of all its heavily trod Disney-fying and formulaic cheese it's just so damn irresistible: eye-watering in how visually breathtaking it is with a handful of lively bops from Lin-Manuel Miranda who - politics aside - rarely ever misses a beat in the musical department. Treads water (no pun intended) for the first part with all the parroting of like 10 other movies from the company practically verbatim until the charming Maui shows up, who still represents the same sorts of tropes but complete with a clever design gimmick via the moving tattoos and gargantuan, blocky proportions; plus come on he's voiced by Dwayne Johnson - you can't *not* love him. The last half hour is more or less a wondrous technical showcase for peddling this beautiful, paradise-like animation and let me tell you it's a sight to see. Very funny too. Should hate it but don't, well done. š”š°š°šµš°š±šŖš¢ smokes it, though.

Lindsay (1717 KP) rated A Night at the Farm: A Bedtime Story in Books
Feb 8, 2021
I think I found a great bedtime story. It is a book about animals. It is on a farm. It is called āA Night at the Farmā. It is funny. I enjoyed it. I was laughing at the antics that the animal did while the farmer is asleep. Maybe your child is a night owl and likes to party. They enjoy farm animals and wonder what they might do while you sleep. This book is funny and unique.
The pictures are down well. Its pages look so real. The antics the animals are doing make you laugh and enjoy the story. Parents should get this for their young readers. It is good for children of four years old and to eight years old. If you are older that does not mean you will not like it.
There seems to be a party that begins once the humans go to sleep for the night. The party lasts all night long. Will the animals enjoy the fun. The farm seems unaware. Each page has some rhyming going on but you will be drawn in with the picture being so real. The animals look so real. The animals get into mischief and other trouble. What will they get into? There is something fun for everyone. If your child enjoys fashion shows. There seem to be a dance-off and I wonder what animals are on that. Children will love this bedtime story and the fun mini animals in the book.

My name is Terra, and Iām a Psychic. I have visions, and I need them now more than ever. Of the twelve that escaped from Portiside Prison, one is back behind bars but the rest are still out there, desperate and all the more dangerous for it.
I need to focus, but things between me and my boss are spiralling dangerously out of control, and Iām starting to see my partner in ways Iāve never seen him beforeāways Iāve never even considered. I need a moment of clarity, but a bodyās been found; our only lead being a single feather, black as night. Clarity can wait.
Thereās no rest for the wicked.
Canāt tell you how much I love this series and writer! I love Terra she is a main character that is so well balanced I took an instant like to her. Cole is a bit of a dick in this one Iām slowly starting to switch loyalty and rooting for Kaleb to win her heart instead. Loved this storyline and actually felt pain for Raven such a sad existence. Really good book canāt wait to see what havoc is caused on Earth side!

A stand alone book. As a fan of Tad Williams I have put this book off from reading (it had been on my TBR list for over a decade) because of a previous stand alone book, I was afraid I won't like this one. Luckily, because of a TBR reading challenge I finally picked it up, and was pleasantly surprised at the intricate worlds that have been built.
The book is set up in five parts and has a couple of POVs most being that of Theo (the main character) who goes from California to the world of Faerie. A very different Faerie then expected. A very unique take on it.
Theo is thrown into a world he doesn't understand and has an extremely difficult time with well... don't want to give any spoilers. Although I will say the author isn't afraid to put Theo through hell, from the get.
While I did figure out quite a lot of the book along the way I was more pleased then annoyed when I was right in my assumptions.
The descriptions are very realistic and graphic in places (the author's note at the beginning is warranted) making this book quite long as are most of his books. A good long read that may not be for everyone.

LeftSideCut (3778 KP) rated Halloween H20: 20 Years Later (1998) in Movies
Apr 22, 2021
After the detritus that was Halloween 5 and 6, H20 is a somewhat refreshing sequel that brings the series back to basics. The return of Jamie Lee Curtis is of course a huge plus point. Revisiting her character 20 years later is a pleasure, and Curtis is brings her A-game, as she always does. The rest of the cast are perfectly likable as well.
Story wise, H20 is a direct sequel to the first two movies, ignoring everything that came in between, a good decision considering how convoluted the overarching story became before. Existing in a post Scream world means that H20 has its fair share of meta moments, as EVERY horror immediately following Wes Craven's classic did. It's all a little on the nose, but any horror fan surely can't help but crack a smile during the hugely unsubtle nod to Psycho.
Unfortunately, there are some downfalls. The script leaves a lot to be desired, flitting between quoting the original Halloween (a lot) and just being plain overdramatic. The pacing is also a little iffy - considering the runtime clocks in at under 90 minutes, H20 flirts with boredom more than once. When Michael Myers is finally in the midst of things, it's hard not to be distracted by his weird looking (and frequently changing) mask.
Overall though, H20 is a good time that doesn't take itself too seriously. A pretty middle of the road slasher, but far from the worst in the series.
