Zuky the BookBum (15 KP) rated The Witches in Books

The most important thing you should know about REAL WITCHES is this. Listen very carefully. Never forget what is coming next.
REAL WITCHES dress in ordinary clothes and look very much like ordinary women. They live in ordinary houses and they work in ORDINARY JOBS.
That is why they are so hard to catch.
Truth be told, I never read this book as a child. I got about 40 pages in and it scared the living daylights out of me. Now, as an adult, I can still understand why. I can now also truly appreciate how terrifying it is! I mean, this book contains subjects such as a car accident killing our narrator's parents, adults murdering and eating their own children, children being led away by claw handed women, maids threatening to drown pets… it’s all so horrifying!
The imagery in this book is the stuff of nightmares. Grandma really doesn't hold back on the horror and gore in her stories, they are deliciously dark and disturbing. Honestly, one of the worst parts of this book, for me, is when we first encounter a witch from the narrator's eyes - She was looking up at me and smiling in the most peculiar way… this woman’s lips went upwards and downwards, showing all her front teeth and gums. The gums were like raw meat. Gah, horrifying!
Fun fact: This book terrified (and terrifies) me so much that I'm still affected by it today (no thanks to my mum!!) Each and every night I still tuck my thumbs into my fists, to stop the witches coming and taking them away, like they did with Grandma’s.
While I am still scared by this book, I can also now appreciate the comedic aspects of it too. Grandma is an absolute hoot! Some of the conversations between grandson and narrator are hilarious.
Why this book is for kids I'll never know, so as a children's book, it gets 2 stars, but in general terms I think this is one of the best horror novels I've ever and will ever read so it gets a full 5 out of 5 from me!

Bewitched ( Betwixt & Between book 2)
By Darynda Jones
Forty-something Defiance Dayne only recently discovered she comes from a long line of powerful witches. Added to that was the teensy, infinitesimal fact that she is what’s called a charmling. One of three on the entire planet. And there are other witches who will stop at nothing to steal her immense power, which would basically involve her unfortunate and untimely death.
No one told her life after forty would mean having to learn new lifeskills—such as how to survive a witch hunter dead set on killing her—or that the sexiest man alive would be living in her basement.
Whoever said life begins at forty was clearly a master of the underappreciated and oft maligned understatement.
It was ok! For some reason this just didn’t grip me as much as the first one did and I normally love her work. It wasn’t a bad book at all but for me it lacked that spark that would have me normally give it 4 or 5 stars. There are some very likeable characters. Just felt a bit rushed.

Merissa (11800 KP) rated Fire Witch (Witches of Westwood Academy #3) in Books
May 29, 2023
FIRE WITCH is the third book in the Witches of Westwood Academy and this time, it is Tana's turn. She has always been the snarky one and now we find out why. We also find out just why this group of witches was placed together, instead of in the separate Elemental-based dorms.
This is a quick read so don't expect a multi-layered story. What you get is quick and hot (it is Fire, after all!) Personally, I would have preferred it a little longer to see more build-up to the connection between Brandon and Tana. However, saying that, the story does move along, giving answers to questions you may not have even realised you had.
A great addition to the series and it will definitely leave you wanting more. I would recommend you read these as a series, but each book can be read as a standalone if you wanted.

April Rose Mossow (93 KP) rated Teen Witch: Wicca for a New Generation in Books
May 20, 2019
I've read all of Ravenwolf's books. I enjoyed them greatly. I've always been a skeptic when it comes to religion and spirituality but Wicca was always something that seemed different (I'm . Since I first read TW, I've dabbled, and something always sticks in my mind with this author's books. She has a way of dumbing it down for New Witches and the like. Not too much where its like "duh" but enough so that someone who may not be entirely familiar with Wicca would be able to understand the information.

Merissa (11800 KP) rated Earth Witch (Witches of Westwood Academy #4) in Books
Jun 21, 2023
EARTH WITCH is the fourth book in the Witches of Westwood Academy and we return to the Academy as Jade is recovering from a mishap in Earthquake class - yep, that's a thing!
As with all the other books, this is a quick read and focuses on both the overall story arc and Jade herself. Arlo is on hand to help her with her self-esteem issues although his constant use of 'Sweet Jade' felt over the top to me. Jade liked it though, which I guess is all that counts.
There was a part in here that didn't make much sense to me OR Jade, and that was why her ex turned up at the Academy to bully her. Maybe I missed something, or maybe it will become clear in later books. One thing that did become clear are the six types of witches and, what do you know, we've got the whole bingo card!
Really looking forward to the next instalment and definitely recommended by me.

Chrissy Bush (42 KP) rated A Discovery of Witches in Books
Mar 21, 2019
Good premise but other things could've made it better.
I loved the aspect of how witches demons and vampires lived amoung humans undetected and how they act and what not. However, I believe that because they bring up genetics and what not for certain traits vampires may have or carry. That it would be more interesting to find out more about it. The romance between the main characters was nixe, but I think I would have liked them to no have clicked so instantly and been a bit more drawn out.

This was a series that was a spin off of vampire diaries but I feel was so much better. I love the way it ended but not that it ended. This follows the story of the original vampire family and how they became so cruel, also how in a way how they became good again. Thought a little mirical baby names hope, and how in the end why she became an orphan. If you love a good witch, vampire, werewolf fued this is just a must see.

Charley (64 KP) rated Wyrd Sisters (Discworld, #6; Witches #2) in Books
Jan 27, 2019
Well I have always had a soft spot for Terry Pratchett book and his stories about the discworld transport you to this amazing place.
He has a dark sense of humour that you can see throughout his books.
Wyrd sisters is one of my favourites of his Books. This is the first in a series of his books about three witches. It's funny right from the start and the complexity of his characters always amaze me.
If you like a book with good characters, funny jokes and a touch of magic then this is the books for you.
