It's easy to see why the response was so underwhelming, but still, after the film reaches its end, I had little doubt that David Robert Mitchell is one of the most unique and creative writer/directors working today.

A Fairly Awesome Mix
Marvel sequel has everything you liked from the original (probably), except the strength of the script (original writer did not come back and director James Gunn, not noted for his iron grip on narrative, did it himself).

Lots of good jokes and set pieces ensue, but one quickly loses track of exactly where the film thinks it's going - the middle section meanders about like crazy. Tries to strike a more serious note at the end; winds up just coming across as a bit sentimental. Lots to niggle about, but also a great deal to enjoy - hopefully they'll make Gunn use a co-writer on Volume 3.

"She’s brilliant beyond brilliant. I was reading this at this black hair salon while I was getting my braids done so I felt like the best of all of America. Ephron has a way with language and jokes. She’s very much a writer who uses her personal life to fuel her work. It’s really funny. Women who are older, people ignore their contributions, but people always craved her writing and her take on the world, and it’s a testament to her skills as a writer, and how she could get you into her world and make you want to be a part of it and keep reading."

"Amazingly, Joyce basically tells you how to be a writer here, in one of the most dazzling, lucid, visceral memoirs. The passage where he describes standing in the mouth of a shallow, pebbly river, at sunset, having a revelation about the rest of his life, is scientifically provable to get you as high as a quarter of an MDMA tablet. But the modern reader can't help but note that, as a story of a working class adolescent who thinks he's intellectually superior to everyone around him, is desperate to be a writer, and wanks a lot, Portrait of a Young Artist is also incredibly similar to."
