Awix (3310 KP) rated Battleship (2012) in Movies
Mar 7, 2018 (Updated Mar 7, 2018)
Zombie reflexes in the Hollywood blockbuster machine sputtered into a grisly half-life and pondered the question 'if movies about the Transformers toys make so much money, what other toy/game based rubbish can we railroad audiences into going to see?' And the answer that came back was 'let's do a movie based on Battleship, featuring the pop-star Rihanna'.
Utterly dimwitted action blockbuster and Michael Bay pastiche; the weird thing is that Michael Bay pastiches are marginally better than actual Michael Bay films, mainly because if your starting point is a Michael Bay film the only way is up. This is still insultingly stupid. The actors deserve some kind of credit for getting through the film with straight faces, given it includes a laboriously contrived sequence where the characters are basically playing real-life Battleships against the aliens. Somehow made even worse by the way it fawns over members of the military (subtext being that it's unpatriotic not to like this movie). The special effects are not too bad but considering this is a movie with a $210 million budget that's like saying they remembered to put film in the camera.

Steve Fearon (84 KP) rated Dead Snow 2: Red vs. Dead (Død snø 2) (2014) in Movies
Sep 27, 2018
Dark sense of humour (1 more)
Uses bigger budget to good effect
EXTREMELY violent (1 more)
Some of the kills may be a little too much for some
Bigger, Funnier and Bloodier
if you had asked me after my first viewing, I may have given a 7/10 but a recent rewatch has reaffirmed just how great this film is.
It takes all of the self-awareness, over-the-top violence and ludicrous setpieces from the original, and just pumps more of all of it straight into its zombified heart.
It becomes more fantastic, more violent, more ruthless...no one is safe, not people in wheelchairs, not women with babies, not children...
Fortunately the brutality is ridiculous enough that it quickly becomes comic-book in terms of its realism, but the gore is plentiful indeed!
The plot is funny in itself, and some of the side characters were great fun, including the world's most unfortunate zombie...
If you haven't seen 'Dead Snow', watch that first (great in its own right) and then watch this.
For fans of Shaun Of the Dead, Tucker & Dale Versus Evil or Troll Hunter

Caitlin Ann Cherniak (85 KP) rated Love, Nina: Despatches from Family Life in Books
Oct 21, 2018
Taken from my review on Goodreads: I enjoy reading my memoirs every once in a while because you have no idea what voices real people will have written on paper. The first half of the memoir actually had endearing moments, especially when it came to how Nina bonded with the boys she was watching while their mother worked. I enjoyed the boys' antics because at least this proves that they are real people. The second half of the book was a lot more boring, especially when it comes to Nina mocking lots of classic literature. Maybe I just didn't like Nina as a character in the memoir. She just seemed way too judgmental of everything even though she did love the boys she was caring for in the 80's. As much as I really wanted to like this book, I started to get bored to the point that I almost dropped it. In fact, I barely remember what happened towards the end because I just skimmed through my Kindle like a zombie. If you guys can survive through it, wonderful. It's just not exactly for me.
Jesters_folly (230 KP) rated Kingdom in TV
Jul 16, 2020
Kingdom is a Korean period drama with zombies.
The king is ill, it is rumoured that it is small pox, however it is also rumoured that he is dead. Crown Prince Lee Chang is trying to find out the truth but is labelled a traitor by the Haewon Cho clan. Trying to find out the truth the Prince travels to a small village only to find that most of it's citizens have been struck down with a mysterious disease. As day turns to night the Prince finds himself besieged by enemies, not all of whom are living.
Kingdom is good, new take on the zombie story. Being set in the past the hero's do not have access to any of the modern ways to kill the un-dead which leaves us with lots of sword fights.
The fight scenes are well choreographed and the political side drives the story.
The characters are well developed including a strong female character in the main cast.
Kingdom is a Korean series but is no subbed, the characters speak with Korean Accents and i believe that most of the actors were not dubbed

Dawn of Chaos ( Caitlin Chronicles book 1)
By Michael Anderle and Daniel Wilcocks
Once read a review will be written via Smashbomb and link posted in comments
The Governor she trusted to protect her wants her dead. The target she was sent to capture wants to help her live.
When Caitlin finally gets the chance to join her brother on a mission outside of the walls of the town she has been trapped inside all of her life, her entire reality is shaken.
Enemies appear in the strangest of places. The zombie-like ‘Mad’ roam the forests. Vampires and Werewolves from the fairy tales of her childhood become reality as Caitlin is forced to discover the truth of the Age of Madness and begin the fight for justice.
So I wasn’t sure what to Expect but it was actually quite good! I got a very walking dead theme but with vampires and weres thrown in! The characters were likeable and of course detestable, loving the female leads which I find sometimes when written by men are just slightly patronising but not here! Looking forward to seeing more.
