A psychiatrist (Oliver Reed) uses experimental 'psychoplasmic' therapy on a troubled woman (Samantha Eggar) in the midst of a custody battle over her daughter. However, as the treatment progresses, people connected to her begin to be attacked by hideous deformed children. Cronenberg's sixth movie was written following the director's own acrimonious divorce, and he said it was his version of Kramer Vs Kramer, 'only more realistic'.
