Just as enjoyable as the original
I'm sure you don't need me to tell you how big a hit 2013 movie Frozen was. For a long while after it was released, you couldn't go on social media, or even turn on a TV, without seeing mention of Frozen in some form. And you couldn't really avoid hearing somebody bash out their rendition of 'Let It Go', arguably one of the biggest and most recognisable songs of this decade. Frozen became the highest-grossing animated film ever and a sequel was always inevitable. But, with any sequel, there's always a high chance that they'll fail to live up to the original, simply coming across as nothing more than a cash grab. Frozen 2 had a lot to live up to!

Following the events of the first Frozen movie, Arendelle is once again a calm, happy and carefree place. Elsa and Anna are close sisters once more. Anna and Kristoff are a couple, although in a running theme throughout the movie, Kristoff is now keen to try and propose to Anna. Meanwhile, some magic from Elsa means that Olaf now has a permafrost, no longer needing his own snow cloud and able to freely go around without fear of melting. He's also extremely keen to learn - becoming more thoughtful and aware of the world, asking existential questions, and sharing new found facts with his friends.

An early scene shows a young Elsa and Anna being told a bedtime story by their parents. The story involves an enchanted forest and their grandfather, who went to the forest as king in order to make peace with it's inhabitants, the Northuldra, and to sweeten the deal by building them a shiny new dam. But a betrayal caused the elemental forces of the forest - air, earth, fire and water - to become angered, resulting in a fierce battle and the entire forest being sealed for all time beneath a magical shield of mist. Clearly this story is being told in order to set the scene for a major plot point in this sequel, so it's not long before present day Elsa begins to hear voices - a mysterious siren, beckoning her with a beautiful melody. And when the terrifying elemental spirits strike the town of Arendelle, forcing its residents to flee for safety, she remembers the story we've just heard and heads off to the enchanted forest to look for answers and a resolution, closely followed by Anna, Kristoff, Sven and Olaf.

What follows is an epic adventure involving all of the main characters as they work together, or separately at times, to try and regain order and peace to this expanding world we're being introduced to. It becomes a quest to uncover the sisters ancestry and an attempt to undo damage caused by past generations with each character deals with their own personal transformation and growth. It's all beautifully animated, as you'd expect, full of peril, action and fun. And Olaf still manages to generate big laughs in pretty much every scene he's in!

Once again, Frozen 2 boasts an impressive soundtrack of songs. At least one is extremely powerful and catchy, knocking loudly at the door of 'Let It Go' in terms of memorability (admittedly, I've already listened to it a few times since leaving the cinema!), and there are more fun songs for Olaf to sing too. Kristoff comes up short though, getting dealt the worst of the songs, but that's not to say they're not still enjoyable.

Like Toy Story 4 earlier this year, Frozen 2 is a sequel that wasn't really necessary. But, as with Toy Story, it is still wonderful to be back in the company of such great characters. Having re-watched the original Frozen the day before seeing Frozen 2, I can honestly say that the sequel for me was just as enjoyable and entertaining as the first. Highly recommended.

Frozen II is a genuinely fantastic sequel that build on the original in every way.

It's feels more mature for a start. It's still a magical, kid friendly, animated adventure for sure, but the film manages to touch upon subjects such as death, loss, depression, how it's ok to feel angry, and all without veering too far away from a family feature.

The more mature tone comes with more mature animation - and it's really something. The animation is pretty much flawless. The contrasting colour pallets - the icy cold blues and white of Arendelle, to the autumnal greens and oranges of the forest - are all pleasing to look at.
I'm not one for musicals, and I wasn't keen on the songs from the original, but the music in Frozen II is way more tolerable. Well written, and sometimes epic, and that Lost in the Woods song is a banger - the fact that Weezer did a recording of it just earns the movie bonus points in my eyes.

The plot is easy to follow, whilst offering a twist here and there, but the overall message is once again, the importance of family, and the importance of writing wrongs from the last. Interestingly, there is no villain in Frozen II. The focus is purely on the good guys trying to make the world a better place for everyone. It's all rather wholesome.
The characters are all great in their own ways, and the creature designs are fantastic.

I have nothing bad to say about Frozen II. It's a damn solid sequel that easily surpasses the first film. Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go and listen to Weezer all night.

An entertaining sequel
When we got to the cinema last night, my friend and I realised that neither of us had seen a trailer for this film. Weird considering how big a film it is, but I've been left wondering if this has had an impact on our overall enjoyment of the film.

Either way, Frozen II is an impressive sequel in that it's actually very good. The animation is superb as you'd expect from Disney and there's a lot of heart and humour in this. There are 2 notably stand out brilliant moments in this film: the first is Olaf's retelling of the events of the first film (I nearly wet myself laughing at this point) and Kristoff's power ballad - not only is it a great song but hilarious too - I won't spoil it for anyone but Sven and the reindeer, genius. The songs themselves are good and there are some stand out tunes amongst them all, but I did feel like they didn't quite match up to those from the original. I've actually come out of the film with Let It Go stuck in my head rather than any other the newer tracks.

The plot in this film is good, it's your typical Disney fare with some fun and adorable characters thrown in. My biggest problem with this though is the overall cheesy lovey dovey over affectionate-ness of it all. Yes I know that's not unusual for a Disney film, but this felt like way too much even for Disney. I was ready to reach for the sick bag by the time it finished. It's a shame really as I think if they had eased up on the over the top sisterly love, I would've rated this a little higher as I really enjoyed everything else. Or maybe I just hated this aspect because I'm a stone cold heartless Brit...

Overall a very good impressive sequel, that almost comes close to matching up to the original.

Don't let it go.
I loved Frozen. I got so swamped in the post release merchandising that it wasn't until it was on in the background when I visited my grandad and we ended up watching it again then I remembered how special a piece of cinematic history it was. Therefore going to watch Frozen 2 I was more excited than the kids. Was I disappointed? Well no actually.

The cynic in me does see the extra characters and continuous outfit changes as part of the cash cow for toys and merchandise but it's just lush and gorgeous and a huge adventure. There is also the point that my daughter's are watching strong determined and assertive women and although they are princesses it is them doing the saving.

The film holds your attention all the way through and is just gorgeous. I could watch it again and again.

Frozen 2 is not only better than Frozen but it also manages to develop its characters futher, delves deeper into its lore and overall tells a tale thats much darker and way more mature. Its apparent from the start of the movie that this sequel has more to say than just being a cheap cash in and as we check in on Elsa we see that although at first everything might seem happy it becomes aparent shes still struggling with demons and troubled on the inside. They clearly are not children anymore and thus dealing with the loss of both their parents is really starting to hit home as they enter the grieving process. This seems to effect Elsa in more ways than she can begin to process and as she struggles to tame her depression and get a hold on her mental health she closes up and alienates the people that are close to her. Its all incredibly dark stuff and at times it became so bleak that it had both adults and children in our screening breaking out in tears. Olaf does lighten things up occasionally however with some genuinely funny comedy, silly facts and some nice philosophy too with a role that feels important this time rather than there for comic relief. Pact with cool mythology and stuning visuals the film also manages to create not only a great coldness but an incredible warmth to really drive home its message of the importance of family and heritage. Elemental effects are extremely impressive too as is the improved animation quality and while the songs arnt as catchy this time they flow with more heart/meaning and with way more creativity visually too. Frozen 2 might not be perfect but as an adult it spoke to me more than the last one did and seeing it have the guts to mature and progress rather than replicate is a bold move I really respected. A truly magical fable full to the brim with lore and mythology that deals with such grown up isuess so respectfully and realistically that it will speak way more this time to adults than it does kids. Frozen 2 successfully teaches us all the message that we dont have to 'let It Go' or deal with our problems alone and by remembering and talking about those that are gone warms the heart and keeps them alive in us.

Humour, some awesome one liners
Emotional depth and even some good role modelling for men showing emotion
Loveable characterisation
Some cliches/predictability but at bearable levels (0 more)
Funny and deeply emotional
A very worthy sequel, which is difficult when the first was such a big hit. Had some darker moments than the first but so emotionally rich and visually beautiful.

I love this film! It is a great squeal to Frozen. There are a few inconsistencies with the first film but you can look pass them quite easily. I especially like the sings in this film, especially Christoff's and Elsa's main song.
