Ive said it before and I'll say it again - I'm not a fan of musicals, and Moana isn't a film that's going to change my mind on that. However, as it's goes with Disney more often or not, there's plenty of good stuff here that make it an enjoyable adventure.

It has a decent and easy to follow plot, and a strong female lead for a start. The titular character is easy to like and root for, as are all the characters come to think of it. Dwayne Johnson's character Maui starts off as a douche but he's not so bad by the end.
The whole film looks incredible. The animation is bursting with colour, the water in particular looks great. There are some great set pieces that take full advantage of this - especially the neon drenched scene with Tamatoa, and the films climax looks fantastic as well.

The musical numbers just didn't do anything for me. I didn't hate any of the songs (the 'I AM MOANAAA' bit was pretty badass), but it's mostly just little too cheesy for my taste, much like Frozen was.

Overall though, Moana is a pretty good time, with a nice Disney approved moral heart, and I'm sure it will stand up alongside the many other Disney classics for years to come.

Really enjoyed this one. A truly great modern Disney film.
I fell in love with this film, and I waited to see it. I saved it for my flight to Hawaii and I'm glad I did.... Here's an amazing movie poster fom Tom Whalen, one of my favorite alternate movie poster designers.

Sweet movie with touches of Mulan (which is even better in my opinion). Following the formula of a wilfull female lead character with a comical animal sidekick. Bright and colourful with catchy tunes.

Beautiful animation
Another great animation and for me one of the best in a long time. It's bright and colourful with amazing detail. The sea looks so realistic. For once I didn't mind the songs either. Simple story for the whole family to enjoy.

I enjoyed the humor, the voice acting, and the plot. I also liked that the heroine wasn't just there to be married off once she finished what she had to do. I found the songs especially delightful. (0 more)
I saw the songs on Youtube long before I watched the movie. The movie lived up to the catchy songs, though I wasn't sure it would. Some parts of the movie, like the killer coconuts, probably could have been left out or beefed up, but I found it to be a thoroughly enjoyable movie.

"You're Welcome" >>> "How Far I'll Go", I said what I said πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ

Another overly-familiar, word-for-word rehash of *all* the exact same clichΓ©s from the Disney Machine with no real profundity or nuance to back up the convention. I mean even the title character the movie is named after has about as much depth as a piece of blank construction paper. That being said however, this is - what I can only describe as - terminally cute. In spite of all its heavily trod Disney-fying and formulaic cheese it's just so damn irresistible: eye-watering in how visually breathtaking it is with a handful of lively bops from Lin-Manuel Miranda who - politics aside - rarely ever misses a beat in the musical department. Treads water (no pun intended) for the first part with all the parroting of like 10 other movies from the company practically verbatim until the charming Maui shows up, who still represents the same sorts of tropes but complete with a clever design gimmick via the moving tattoos and gargantuan, blocky proportions; plus come on he's voiced by Dwayne Johnson - you can't *not* love him. The last half hour is more or less a wondrous technical showcase for peddling this beautiful, paradise-like animation and let me tell you it's a sight to see. Very funny too. Should hate it but don't, well done. 𝘑𝘰𝘰𝘡𝘰𝘱π˜ͺ𝘒 smokes it, though.

Typical Disney musical adventure, with Moana of the title the daughter of a Polynesia chieftain who sets off on a quest across the ocean waves in search of the demigod Maui (voiced by none other than Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson) in order to convince him to return stolen property to lift a curse.

The big draw is, of course, The Rock (to give him his wrestling name), whose character initially starts out as unlikeable before. by the end of the movie, not being as bad as originally thought.

I also had to chuckle at the "Daughter of a chieftain. Cute animal sidekick. You're a Princess" (to paraphrase somewhat) line that he came out with!
