Red Queen

2015 | Young Adult (YA)

This is a world divided by blood - red or silver. The Reds are commoners, ruled by a Silver elite in possession of god-like superpowers. And to Mare Barrow, a seventeen-year-old Red girl from the poverty-stricken Stilts, it seems like nothing will ever change. That is, until she finds herself working in the Silver Palace. Here, surrounded by the people she hates the most, Mare discovers that, despite her red blood, she possesses a deadly power of her own. One that threatens to destroy the balance of power. Fearful of Mare's potential, the Silvers hide her in plain view, declaring her a long-lost Silver princess, now engaged to a Silver prince. Despite knowing that one misstep would mean her death, Mare works silently to help the Red Guard, a militant resistance group, and bring down the Silver regime. But this is a world of betrayal and lies, and Mare has entered a dangerous dance - Reds against Silvers, prince against prince, and Mare against her own heart ...

Oh...Okay
I enjoyed her writing style a lot. I enjoyed the way things were explained and drawn out, and I really enjoyed the premise. What I didn't like, and what ruined the reading experience for me, was how much I hated the main character. She kept whining. It was frustrating to me. I ended up not finishing the series.

Not a Big Fan
I was not a big fan of this book. It’s not so much that it was a horrible book, it was simply completely forgettable. I read it about two years ago, and then in the last year I started to here a lot about it. I watched reviews for it and read blog posts discussing it. The problem is, that as I watched the reviews, I had no idea that I had already read the book. The plot was so generic that what they were describing made no impact on my memory. It wasn’t until I watched a detailed spoiler review that I realized I had been researching a book I had already read. Mare, the protagonist, has little personality and her desires are not really clear. There is an incredibly forced love triangle. I saw no reason for the love triangle as there was no chemistry between any of the characters. The plus side that I liked was the twist at the end. The writing was also fairly good. The plot was just not there for me.

I have wanted to read this book since it was published. I'm in charge of the teens section at the bookstore that I worked at and I fell in love with the cover. I have been pretty excited to see that this book has been on the teen best sellers list since its publication and it definitely didn't disappoint.

The characters were really awesome. I could relate to the characters and I was definitely rooting them on. I loved how flushed out the characters were and the insecurities that presented themselves.

The plot was definitely fun. I loved how many twists and turns there were and was not able to guess what was going to happen next (which is usually the case with young adult books).

Ultimately, this book was amazing and I highly recommend it to anyone who likes Young Adult fantasy books.

In quick and rapid-fire succession about Victoria Aveyard's <i>Red Queen</i>...

~ Amanda Dolan is a phenomenal narrator. She makes the pages come alive in the ears if you know what I mean. Regal accent for the queen, awesome rambling skills that show Mare is nervous, fabulously "bitchy" voice for Evangeline, etc. Dolan might even top <a title="Ruin and Rising by Leigh Bardugo" href="https://bookwyrmingthoughts.com/audiobook-review-ruin-and-rising-by-leigh-bardugo/"; target="_blank" rel="noopener">Fontgang.</a> (Don't worry. I still like your skills.)

~ Someone tell me the song title and composer of the music at the beginning and the end of the audiobook because I love it. It has this ominous feeling that I like. Oh, and I admit I'm a music geek.

~ There are some things I question. 1) Why would you use a shield that contains Mare's powers if you're trying to kill her? I mean, you KNOW her power. 2) I don't think I caught how Silver blood became silver. Is it something as simple as, I don't know, putting a bit of silver in Botox before injecting it? *strokes imaginary beard thoughtfully*

~ The end. Any book that actually has an unpredictable ending is instantly music in my ears (not that I'm being biased, but let's just say you get more merit) – when you read so many books, things tend to repeat. But that's a discussion for another day.

~ You're like <i>The Winner's</i> trilogy. I don't need to say anything more, because <a title="The Winner's Crime" href="https://bookwyrmingthoughts.com/review-the-winners-crime-by-marie-rutkoski/"; target="_blank" rel="noopener">this letter explains it all</a>. If I write this one as a letter, I'll plagiarize my own self.
