Animated musical space family comedy from the same team who brought you the original Lego Movie (plus, one presumes, lego bricks in general). Fraternal rivalry between Finn and his little sister is oddly echoed in the Lego world, as leading inhabitants of Apocalypseburg are kidnapped off to another planet by Duplo aliens.

An average sequel
The original Lego movie (and the Lego Batman film) were surprisingly great films, so it's no surprise they decided to make a sequel. Sadly it's also no surprise that the sequel only ends up fairly average.

It looks visually stunning, and I loved how they've tied this in more with the real world. I think it's quite smart how they've managed to link the characters to the real life toys. The problem is the story itself is rather lacklustre and a little all over the place, and most of the jokes fall flat. There was only 1 or 2 things I laughed at during the entire film, which is a shame as the original and Batman film were downright hilarious. Even the music is pretty dull. There's no song that really matches up to the brilliant Everything is Awesome and the ones that almost do are the remix versions of that song. Although I did love the Lonely Island song over the credits. There's a great voice cast in this too, to the point where I spend most of the film trying to figure out who's who. But there are some who sound a little out of place - Richard Ayoade and Noel Fielding to name a couple. And also what was with Will Ferrell? He barely featured in this at all apparent from being a voice from another room, rather odd!

Curse of the Sequel Strikes Again!!
So the 1st Lego Movie was a big and very enjoyable surprise to me. I went into it not knowing what to expect and came out with a big grin on my face. So going into the 2nd Lego movie I had high expectations that it just didn't live up to.

There was still some spark but it lacked the same level of fast gagtastic pace. A lot of the gags felt a bit flat and the increase in real-world action didn't enhance the film. I know it's a Lego movie but the story just was all over the place and didn't tie anything together. For what seemed to be a simple story of sibling rivalry there was a lot of new characters; in particular Rex; that I didn't feel hit the right spot.

I was left underwhelmed.

Everything is no longer awesome
I liked the first Lego Movie a lot. I liked the Lego Batman movie even more. I should have liked this movie too. Maybe I was just having a grumpy Monday, but unfortunately I didn't like this one very much at all.

The Lego movies thrive on being fast paced - a visual feast for the eyes with rapid fire gags and knowing little nods and references to film and other pop culture. Lego Movie 2 is certainly fast paced, but because I didn't find any of the gags funny, I quickly grew tired and annoyed by it all. Only when we start to see a lot more of the real world - brother and sister fighting, Mum getting involved (Will Ferrell reduced to just shouting something out from another room rather than appearing on screen, weirdly) - that we get a real understanding of the impact on the Lego world and why everything is happening. That brought a real coherency and sentimentality to everything and meant that I enjoyed the final third of the movie a lot more than the rest of it.

I loved both Lego movies. They are creative and really funny. What i love about these movies is it brings you back to your days as a kid. The story behind both are great. It's a funny and great movie for kids and adults.
