Post-apocalyptic drama. A coal miner (Belafonte) digs himself out after a disaster to find that while he was cut off, a poisonous cloud has wiped out almost all human life. He makes his way to New York where he encounters other survivors, but can they leave the attitudes of the old world behind and live together peacefully?
