"As I read Trick Mirror I thought: the smartest human on planet Earth has been located and her name is Jia Tolentino. Her reflections are biting but relatable—because she writes with vulnerability as a product of the very culture she’s critiquing. Tolentino’s work helps me understand my world and myself more deeply."

"The rarest of books about the experience of a science writer uncovering and investigating a cell line that changed the world, all while being thrown into a transformative journey of discovering race and racism in America, the culture of African Americans in the USA, and the painful reality of loss and family. A truly remarkable read—and I failed at science. Fascinating and phenomenal, heartbreaking and utterly compelling."

Beautiful depiction of Mexican culture

The animation in this movie is beautiful. I love the use of color! The story is cute, if predictable. The music is upbeat and catchy. There were a few things that bothered me. Why does the whole family go by the last name Rivera? Shouldn’t the family branches have taken the men’s last names? Also why doesn’t De La Cruz know that Miguel is not his great-great-grandson?

<2021 update>

Have also seen the movie mentioned below. It was just OK; not great.

<original 2016 review>

Prior to reading this, I'd heard good things about it, and was aware that - like seemingly nearly all of the current Young Adult Dystopian novels - there was a movie for it in the pipeline, by none other than Spielberg himself.

Set in the near-future, I found this to be like a cross between the Bruce Willis movie Surrogates (in that nearly everybody seems to live their life vicariously through other means), The Matrix (cyber reality) and maybe even a bit of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (the MacGuffin that gets the plot rolling). it probably helps that - unlike the characters - I actually *was* a kid in the 80s, and so get plenty of the various pop-culture references made.

Plenty, but not all - this, remember, is set in America, so leans more towards the American or Japanese spectrum of popular culture than European.

"This might be the best book I know of that describes restaurant culture. In general I am a very big fan of George Orwell, I could have selected half of the books on this list to be authored by him. But I particularly enjoy this one because it tells me something about my industry."

"This has to be one of the greatest war films ever made. It transports you into a culture and a struggle, and you wind up siding with people who will stop at nothing for their freedom. The imagery is striking and heart-wrenching. Watching this film will make you think differently about our current world."

The iconic masterpiece that cemented Eastwoods Hollywood career, and was one of the 1970's best vigilante cop movies to boot.
He shares screen time with a 357 Magnum and delivered the "Do you feel lucky, punk" phrase that has become synonymous with cop movies since.
Not the best film in Eastwoods career but one that sticks out in pop culture and is enduring.

YA contemporary
For the most part I really enjoyed Darius the Great is Not Ok by Adib Khorram. This young adult contemporary novel was heart wrenching and at times heart breaking to read. At times I felt like the main character Darius was a little over the top with how sensitive he was but for the most part I was rooting for him to rise up. This was a great story showing the struggles of living with depression while trying to find yourself and dealing with the teenage awkwardness of growing up. I completely felt for Darius and could relate to a lot of his struggles throughout the book, especially with trying to see where he fit in with his culture and being the only one standing awkwardly to the side not understanding the language of his heritage. I really loved all of the characters and learning about this culture and I would definitely recommend.
