A Clockwork Orange (1971)
A Clockwork Orange (1971)
1971 | Crime, Sci-Fi

"A Clockwork Orange. I was absolutely stunned by the entire thing. That’s a Warner Bros movie too, so they’re smiling right now. That’s an amazing movie. Everything about the execution is flawless. I saw that at a revival house when I was about 19 years old. There was a theater on 99th and Broadway called The Metro and all they did was show old movies, so in 1982 I went and I saw something from 1971 and it was 11 whole years old, and it was considered an old movie. Can you imagine seeing something from 2003 and having it being considered an old movie? That movie just blew me away. I couldn’t believe the level of violence at the beginning, then I couldn’t believe the social satire and everything, the execution, the slow motion, the way it was composed. And Malcolm McDowell’s performance? I was just riveted by the whole thing. It blew me away."

"Not lovely at all is the music of the Edwardses, who are always at least slightly off. Cynics say the pair are really actual jazz superstars Jo Stafford and Paul Weston, but I choose to believe there is really a woman who was born to sing 'You're Blasé; as if she were hanging upside down and swinging back and forth like a drunken pendulum, and a man who plays the piano as though he were also juggling. Hailing from Trenton, NJ, the couple tripped onto the world stage in 1957 – twelve years before the Shaggs – and off again in 1982 after five albums and five singles, some of which are pretty hard to find, so the two volumes of Greatest Hits are a good start. (Misleadingly, the Complete Original Albums compilation contains only the first two albums.) Now that I have publicly come out as a fan, I guess I have to buy all the albums. Excuse me for a moment. Okay, I'm back. "

The Thing (1982)
The Thing (1982)
1982 | Horror, Sci-Fi
I've actually been meaning to see this movie. The death of Wilford Brimley caused me to watch it in honor of his illustrious career.

When watching this film for the first time in the 21st century, you absolutely must accept and understand that the visual representations that are made are circa 1982. At times, that is a difficult thing to remember.

The story told in the movie is quite a good one. A trope that would become a classic. A mysterious chain of events takes place that leads to an arctic crew coming to terms with the fact that they are not alone. As if that wasn't hard enough to come to terms with, they come to understand that this being is attempting to literally "become" one of them. The acting is good for the time of production. Fans of the genre and fans of films from the era should definitely be able to enjoy this movie without effort.

Absolutely charming!
Until recently, it's been a film that's never really appealed to me, but watching it now I can see that it is a charming, emotional, and all-round superbly made musical.

The way the film is made is incredible. Although it was released in 1982, the film has the charm, feel and humour of a musical released in the 1950s or 60s, which is makes it feel that much more special.

The casting is superb, including legends Tim Curry, Carol Burnett, and last but not least the spectacular Albert Finney. Obviously I must mention Aileen Quinn, who put on an outstanding performance as the beloved orphan, Annie.

Finally, the music is great, ranging from silly drunken tunes from Carol Burnett, to Annie's emotional tunes such as "Tomorrow", which when seen on screen adds a whole new layer of emotion to the song.

Overall, an almost perfect film, perfect for musical lovers!
