Underwhelming
Honestly with the plot of the book they could have took it so much further. for one the characters just seemed so 2D and so I couldn't emphasise with them at all.
Thestart was promising but even then to much of what was happening was given away. Yes I know that a lot of authors use the technique of letting the reader know before the characters do but in this book it was just overused.
It is a shame because the idea of the book was good and you can tell the author has the right imagination for it but they fail in implementing it at least in this case.

Only watched the 3D version on DVD so far, some scenes look good and you can tell it was made and shot to be a 3D film. Some scenes looked more like a hologram though. I have to add the colours seemed a bit out at times .....barely noticed the blood which there is tons of!? Will watch again in 2D soon.
Otherwise it's a fun, very bloody, gory creature feature with some good SFX, plenty of hot girls including Kelly Brook, good soundtrack, some tongue in cheek humour and a decent cast! It's a little short at 78mins and the climax of the film wasn't exactly epic. If you like cool films that know their target audience, you'll enjoy this!

Better than La La Land.
I was actually dreading this movie. Luckily, I have my handy moviepass ($9.95 a month, one 2D movie a day for the month), so I wasn't spending my own money on it. I was dreading it mostly because I hated La La Land and the songs were written by the same people. I was glad it was better than that. I don't really like Michelle Williams as an actress, so she was the only really annoying part of it.
I will say that it was trying too hard to be Moulin Rouge, and it definitely failed on that. Let's face it, Moulin Rouge is one of the best (best in my eyes) modern musicals, and it's the measuring stick I use for all modern musicals.

Remake/reimagining of the 1981 original, I remember the big thing about this at the time as the special effects. Or, rather, the post-production 3D effects added released, as this was, only a few short years after James Cameras na exceptional 'Avatar'. Whereas 'Avatar', however, was filmed specifically in and for 3D, this film owes more of a debt to the older 1980s 3D films: watching this in 2D it's quite obvious to see what scenes were added specifically for the effects (I'm thinking mainly of the attack of the giant scorpions, or the Kraken at the end),

Starring Sam Worthingon - whatever happened to him? - as Perseus, the plot of this obviously takes inspiration from Greek myths, even down to having Liam Neeson playing the part of Zeus himself, and of the Pegasus.

Mothergamer (1511 KP) rated the PlayStation 4 version of Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin in Video Games

Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin
Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin
2019 | Action/Adventure, Simulation
Playing as the harvest goddess Sakuna is interesting because she starts out as a rather spoiled person, but when she makes a terrible mistake and gets banished to the realm of mortals with a group of humans to correct it, you start to see her change into a better person. There are two aspects to the game: 2D side scrolling dungeon levels and then a farming sim where you have to grow and harvest rice. Both are a lot of fun. The story is charming and you get to see how Sakuna starts to change because of her interactions with the mortals and working together with them. The art style is very cute and colorful. It's a fun whimsical game. You can read the full review here: http://mg28-mothergamer.blogspot.com/2021/01/sakuna-of-rice-and-ruin-charming.html

Stellar story (2 more)
Excellent vocal cast
Early Joss Whedon writing credit
The contrast between the 2D character animation and the 3D environments is incredibly jarring (1 more)
The music is hailed as "groundbreaking" by the DVD case, but is just kinda meh for me.
Very fun, but visually dated
I remember loving this movie when I was younger, and on rewatching it today I still do, but I have to admit that the visuals haven't aged well. The story is great, if occasionally predictable, and most of the characters are quirky and unique (Gune is a personal favorite!) If they'd restrained themselves to using the early CGI to animate the villainous Drej, a race of aliens made of pure energy, that would have probably aged okay. Those scenes still work. But the fact that all the mechanical elements, ships and such, even spacesuited characters are animated in decidedly dated CGI pulls you out of the narrative pretty fast.

The patron saint of pigs
A mixed bag of stories.

I had to read this at Christmas time, there is no other way, and at first I really quite enjoyed it, the first story The Jubilee Express was really quite something, I loved jubilee's character and her situation with her parents in prison and being shipped off to Florida. At this point Jeb who she meets on the train seems like a really 2D character (and will co time to be for the entire book) I was dissapointed in Jeb's character as there was a lot more potential there but no purpose from the 3 authors. However Jubilee I loved her motives and personality was great and the way that the story flowed from the train into the waffle house and meeting Stuart was great. The Jubilee Express was filled with weird and wonderful characters and a beautiful ending.

It goes down hill from here.

I've never read anything by John Green but I was dissapointed by his segment. The love between Tobin and The Duke is rushed and fake as hell. It didn't feel realistic in any sense of the word, the love in Twilight was better written. The adventure we follow with Tobin is good and enjoyable but the love aspect is not at all. I wanted this segment over with ASAP.

Then the patron saint of pigs, god. I despised Addie. I get that this short story was meant to be a moral story on being selfless etc etc but I got to the end of the story and again was drowned in superficial love that holds no weight or realism. In the end Addie is just forgiven for all that she has done in the past but we see no real change in her thinking. By the end she still constantly acts in her own interests, she only picks up the pig to prove to her friends that she isn't selfish and self absorbed. However the atmosphere of this last story was nice seeing all the stories fully converge.

However I only truly loved The Jubilee Express.
The rest felt heartless and 2D.

Gemini Man (2019)
Gemini Man (2019)
2019 | Action, Drama, Sci-Fi
I wanted to see this in the cinema when it came out in 2019.

I mean, come on, Will Smith returning to his 90s, post Fresh Prince, action hero roots?

I never got round to it, mainly because I never could get anyone else to go with me!

However, it recently popped up on Netflix, so I was finally able to give it a watch.

The verdict? Somewhat generic action thriller, not at all what I was expecting (which was something closer to the likes of Arnie's 'The 6th day'), primarily because of the far more contemporary setting.

It's no secret - it's even of the poster - that Will Smith is being hunted by a younger version of himself, but - watching this - it's obvious where the budget went: ie mainly on those de-ageing bits, with some of the other FX a little bit on the ropey side. That might also be because, I have since learned, that this was filmed for 3d yet I watched it in 2d.

Anyway, enjoyable but forgettable fluff.

Not Shrek 5... Though I can understand the error...
Contains spoilers, click to show
Last night I went to see Shrek 5… No, I actually went to see a Disney digimation which was trying to cash in on the former franchise. But despite its look, this was Disney through and through. Lacking the wit of Pixar and the sharp zaniness of Dreamworks, this was part musical, part sweeping rom-com.

What has happened to this studio, when they lack the confidence to make their films, their way? If this had been hand drawn animation it would have been twice the film, but instead we're treated to a mongrel 3D digimation with the story and style of Disney, Dreamworks and Pixar, but done without any of the flare of any of them.

The 3D was effective but the whole concept is now becoming very, very boring and I would have preferred to have seen it in 2D to be honest. It was never the less enjoyable, it made me laugh and some of the character development was quite effective, such a the horse, Maximus, who was as far removed from Shrek's 'Donkey' as you could imagine, especially as he never utters a word! I recon that kids and pure Disney fans will lap this up, though it is no Lion King, it's certainly an entertaining animation.

Mothergamer (1511 KP) rated the PlayStation 4 version of Trials of Mana in Video Games

Trials of Mana
Trials of Mana
1995 | Action/Adventure, Role-Playing
I remember playing the original Trials Of Mana and enjoying it for the story and gameplay. This Trials Of Mana is a remake and instead of a 2D topdown, it is now fully 3D with updated graphics and modernized gameplay. The story while simple is good and the game itself is charming because of the characters, music, and combat system. Battles are fun and grinding doesn't feel like a chore at all because of the more modern feel. You have 6 different characters to choose from for your main character and can choose 2 characters to be your companions to round out your party. This gives you different story chapters showing you different origin stories for each character as well as different villains. The world in the game is fairly linear with just the main quest and no real side quests, but that doesn't detract from the game too much because there is a lot of replay value with new game plus and the chance to play the game with new characters. The game is about 30 hours and for me personally it was fun and had a nice fairytale feel to it and it appealed to my nostalgia of the original and introduced my daughters to a new JRPG that they really liked.
