Hazel (2934 KP) rated The Hanging Club in Books
Jan 12, 2018
I admit to being a bit of a fan of Tony Parsons having previously read and enjoyed <a href="https://readingstuffnthings.blogspot.co.uk/2015/05/the-slaughter-man-by-tony-parsons.html">"The Slaughter Man"</a> so I was more than pleased when I was accepted to review The Hanging Club by the publisher RandomHouse UK Cornerstone via NetGalley and for which I am grateful as, yet again, Mr Parsons has written a great book.

Unputdownable!!
I read this in one sitting: I was a captive audience, stuck on a train for a 6 hour journey. Honestly though, I would have found it very hard to drag myself away from it if I'd read it at home as well. It's such a rollercoaster of a story and i wouldn't be at all surprised if it's optioned for a movie (is it yet?). It's probably mainly about 'the road not taken', and how we make life choices that we then feel stuck with. But what a way to do it!

3.5 stars.
It was a little shaky at the start for me, what with their being a sex scene almost straight away, but once Hades entered the picture I was quite content to continue reading.
I found the storyline good but also a little odd in places, it was like a mix of different genre's; futuristic, paranormal, fantasy.
Can't say I was a fan of the ending but since I know there's a second book in the series, it helps to create a...foothold? shall we say for it to continue from.

I received a complimentary copy in exchange for a review.
The good thing about anthologies is that if you dont like the story you are reading, you can move on to the next one. Unfortunately, I found myself doing that a lot with this anthology. I requested it because it showcases a culture I am apart of. I go to cons, I read comics books, and play video games. I even have a twitch account where I stream.
But this just wasnt what I was looking for. Out of all the stories, I only enjoyed a couple. I felt that many of the characters and situations were cliché and stereotypical. While I understand that those type of people and situations exist, I felt that each story was a repeat of the others. When I say those people and those situations, I am talking about the anti-social, socially awkward people who are sensitive and easily hurt.
I understand, I get it. Those people need representation, too. But these werent the people I wanted to read about. I wanted to read about the happy, friendly, quirky people you cant help but love. The people who are unapologetic in their love of all things nerdy regardless of what that includes. Most of the protagonists in their stories were fragile and delicate. It seems that every protagonists I read about has been hurt before and is resolved to not love again.
Its an old tired trope. I wish I would have enjoyed it more. I loathe writing negative reviews, but reading this anthology just frustrated me.

Leanne Crabtree (480 KP) rated Imp Series: A Demon Bound, Satan's Sword, & Elven Blood (Imp, #1-3) in Books
Jan 6, 2021
I read the first book as a freebie a few months ago before this bundle came to my attention at a reduced price of 99p.
4.5 stars
A DEMON BOUND
I wasn't sure about this to start with but I quickly warmed up to the story. Admittedly, a lot of my excitement with this was the love interests and her reactions to them as an Imp, wanting to get them into bed and do naughty stuff to them a lot of the time. I'm very intrigued as to what will happen later on in this series with Gregory and also with Wyatt.
I definitely want to read the next book!
SATAN'S SWORD
It had been a while since I read the first book so I should probably have done a reread but I remembered enough once I started that I didn't bother. I remember being more intrigued by the Gregory aspect of the story than Wyatt, and I wish he was in more scenes but maybe that will change in the next one.
I do like Sam, she's a proper demon who abuses her body since she can't hurt herself too much and doesn't die easily. She gets up to quite a lot of mischief with her little gang but it's an enjoyable read.
Off to read book 3.
ELVEN BLOOD
I actually think I was more into this book than the previous one. It might have been that the previous book was fresh in my mind but I was really into it. I am still interested in something happening between Gregory and Sam. PLEASE!!
Aside from that I was intrigued by the elf/demon half breed and when it came out who it was I wasn't that surprised but it added an interesting twist. I was also eagerly waiting to see how Sam would deal with Haagenti. It was a long time coming and I enjoyed how it ended.
I can't wait to read more of this series!

Caffeinated Fae (464 KP) rated Mark of the Princess (The Kingdom Chronicles, #1) in Books

I received this book in exchange for an honest review.
First off, I have to say that this book was a lot of fun but I definitely found the formatting distracting. The version that I read had a few typos and formatting issues that took away from the story.
With that said, I really liked the plot. This book is definitely for a more juvenile audience but the plot was enchanting. I really enjoyed the idea of the novel and how young the romance is (kissing, nothing steamy). I've been reading quite a lot of steamy books so this was refreshing.
I liked the drama and the little bit of angst that the characters had. The characters were interesting and I did keep rooting for them when they had their trials.
Ultimately, I cannot wait to start on the next book. This book was a great start to a series and I cannot wait to see how the plot thickens.

Leanne Crabtree (480 KP) rated Rule (Marked Men, #1) in Books
Jan 7, 2021
3.5 stars.
I liked this, though I thought it was a little too long.
Rule was cool, he's a tattooed, pierced bad boy who slept around with anyone who was up for it at the start and in a way, I didn't like it. Then we met Shaw and I liked her influence on him. They may be polar opposites but they compliment each other quite nicely.
All the main characters were pretty amazing; Nash, Rome, Jet, Ayden, Cora, Rowdy...if I missed anyone I'm sorry! They were a fun bunch and I liked their interaction, teasing and flirting with each other.
I'm kinda sad that I missed "meeting" Remy, he seemed like he was a great person; friend and brother, and I understand why he didn't tell anyone his secret, though I kinda figured it out by about half way through.
A nice start to the series and I look forward to reading Jet, Rome and Nash's stories too.
