I received a complimentary copy in exchange for an honest review.

This is the second novel I have read from this author and I am not sure if I like her or not yet. Both stories feature tormented men with troubled past and the women who love them. I love a good romance about a man falling in love with his best friend’s sister, but there seemed to be a lot lacking from this novel. I felt that the only conflict was the character’s own hang ups.

I did, however, enjoy the bad girl, good boy dynamic. I am so used to the man being the “bad” one that it was refreshing. Not to mention he was genuinely a good guy. I felt like they deserved each other and helped each other heal.

However, I didn’t particularly care for the story line. There was nothing wrong with it or the author’s writing. I just didn’t care about the characters or their story.

"Through a Window – the sequel to In the Shadow of Man – was written in Bournemouth, in my little attic room at the top of the house. One thing I remember vividly – I was using a laptop by this time. I had just finished the chapter on mothers and infants – all those so loved chimpanzees such as Flo, Olly, Melissa, Passion and so on. I was preparing to go and join my family who were sitting on the lawn on a beautiful summer evening. And I pressed the delete button by mistake! And I could not retrieve it. I felt like bursting into tears, or shouting and screaming. But I had spent the last few hours in a very good place. The ideas and words had come together. So I took a deep breath and started the chapter again. I spent two more hours writing really fast. Completed the whole chapter – and I think it was even better than before!"

"Why was this a shock to anyone? I had to put something that wasn't from 1974 in my list! I really could have picked any Fiery Furnaces album… I came across the Fiery Furnaces when my daughter, who must have been about 13 at the time found 'Ex-Guru' and said to me: ""This is up your street Dad, listen to this"". And she was absolutely right; I immediately devoured their entire back catalogue. With this, I love how the lyrics seem really mundane but are somehow very charming; it goes from being a bit of a racket to being fantastically beautiful. And this is the one with the backwards masking, and I like anything with a bit of backwards masking. I have met Eleanor [Friedberger], but I didn't tell her I was a fan. I'm awful. That's why I don't like meeting people; either I disappoint them, or they disappoint me."

The ending! (0 more)

This is the diary of a young man who finds himself kidnapped and held captive in a bunker with a few others.

I think this is a massively underrated book and one that I always tell my friends about when they want book recommendations. It's a short book but it is a memorable one, which is why I rate it so highly.

The ending was brilliant, it leaves you asking a dozen other questions that won't be answered. I can see why some people may not like that, as a lot of stories don't leave you to imagine the ending, but I thought it was brilliant. I was left asking "But why were they abandoned?" Did the kidnapper get bored? Were the police getting too close to finding them?

Guy Ritchie back to his best
I'll start by saying that I am huge Guy Ritchie fan so am probably a bit biased but I am definitely not blinkered though. I realise that he's made a couple of stinkers, a few average films and a couple of excellent films. I think we can now add the gentleman to the list of excellent films! This is by far the best film Ritchie has made post Matthew vaughan. It's a fast paced film with even faster dialogue, Ritchie hasn't had a cast of characters this interesting since snatch with the highlights being fletcher (Hugh grant), coach (Colin Farrell) and Ray (Charlie hunnam). I personally would love to see a spin off movie about Ray and coach. Overall I would give this a 9/10 excellent film.

"My first girlfriend used to listen to Joni Mitchell, and the album that she got me into was Court And Spark. I was 15 or 16 when I first heard it, and the acoustic playing is more like a jazzy sort of thing. I found that really cool. “I love her style as a guitarist, and I love the songs on that album, too. They’re quite funny, and they put you in a certain mood, like Free Man In Paris and People’s Parties. I like it a lot more than Blue and a lot more than Hejira, and the other ones that people go on about. It’s just really good. “Nick Drake’s Pink Moon [1972] also deserves a mention as a very important acoustic album for me. Can we have it as a bonus record?"

Ex Machina (2015)
Ex Machina (2015)
2015 | Sci-Fi, Thriller

"As a piece of modern cinema, I would love to mention Alex Garland’s Ex Machina, which I thought was a brilliant, brilliant film. I think in a year that saw Oscar Isaac and Domhnall Gleeson have another science fiction film out as well, it was such a great reminder of how smaller, more thoughtful, more intense, grown-up… It’s an example of the combination of those things, in a way, a kind of more science fiction in the vein of 2001, a more cerebral, literally cerebral kind of science fiction film that was and just how beautifully performed it is. Alicia Vikander is amazing in that film. It’s a film that I’ve watched many times because I just, I don’t seem to tire of it. I think it’s excellent."

I seem to have a fascination with reading romances involving sex workers. Yeah, I know that's a little weird but I like how they go from being all hard and bitter to finding the one to melt them.

Technically she isn't a sex worker, she just poses nude/half nude for photos in a magazine. But she gets up close and personal with her male counterpart.

I really liked the story, probably thanks to my above mentioned admission.

There were a few reasons why I didn't give it a higher rating. His relationship with his girlfriend, and the ending--or the bit near the end. I'd have liked a little more of them as a couple but since I know there are more books maybe I'll see more of them in those :-)

Wonderful characterization for a first book. (0 more)
I have known the author a long time, and I know how much blood sweat and tears she put into this.. This was a unique take on the undead/zombie theme.
