Isn't It Romantic (2019)? Yep, it's also pretty funny!
There’s a gently subversive streak to Netflix’s latest ‘original’ offering “Isn’t It Romantic” as it sets out to undermine the worn-out romcom tropes while simultaneously adhering to the framework of the genre in this bright and breezy comedy that reunites Rebel Wilson and Adam Devine after “Pitch Perfect 3” cruelly tore them apart....

Bear in mind when I say this movie is very good, I mean for what it is, not that I compare it in greatness to Casablanca or Citizen Kane. It's funny, rude, dirty, and dark, and some nights, that's just what we need. Aubrey Plaza is a weirdo and we love her. Anna Kendrick has more talent than should be allowed by law. She sings, dances, acts, tweets. What can't she do? Adam Devine is another weirdo. We loved his character on Modern Family and also his standup sets. Zak Ephron, though I don't consider myself a huge fan of him, am always impressed with his talent (and amazing good looks.) So, the movie has a good cast and a good premise, sit back and let these weirdos go.

The fifth installment of the franchise hit Ice Age reunites us with Manny
the mammoth (Ray Romano) and his two best friends, Diego the Sabre-tooth
Tiger (Denis Leary) and Sid the Sloth (John Leguizamo). Over the course of
the first 4 films, the unlikely trio become the best of friends,
introduction of love interests for both Manny and Diego, and the birth of a
Manny’s little girl. In this chapter, Manny and Ellie’s daughter Peaches
(Keke Palmer) is engaged to Julian. Manny’s struggle to let go of his
little girl causes tension with his relationship with Julian (Adam Devine).
The unlikely herd is struck by a meteor shower, that was as usual caused by
Scrat the squirrel, that forces them underground back to to land of
Dinosaurs. The return of hyperactive weasel Buck (Simon Peg) is the
highlight of movie, with his unconventional tactics, outlandish anecdotes
and death defying acrobatics. Buck figures out a large asteroid is headed
towards Earth threatening to destroy the entire planet. The only way to
stop the asteroid from it’s extinction level destruction is to find a way
to divert the asteroid away from the planet using magnetic force. And, so
begins the adventure of the herd trying to find the town of Geotopia and
using its sacred gems to help create the magnetic field needed.
They are definitely trashing the laws of paleontology and geology with this
film. The far fetched plot line leaves little to be desired compared to
the story line of its predecessors. The audience is kept busy dealing with
boring family squabbles and Sid desperate to still find love. If it wasn’t
for the role of Buck, the adult audience would consider this movie to be a
complete flop. The younger generation will be scratching their heads
wondering if this scenario is even plausible. I know, my 8 year old kid
was questioning it! Nonetheless, there was enough slap stick comedy and
antics to keep kids entertained and parents chuckling.

In a word...charming
Like most of you, I did not make it to the movie theaters in September, 2015 to catch the Nancy Meyers "fish-out-of-water" comedy THE INTERN about a 70-ish man (Robert DeNiro) who goes to work at an Internet Start-up company headed by a a driven Millennial (Anne Hathaway). It seemed that this film was just going to be another Robert DeNiro phone-it-in "paycheck" comedy and not worth our time.
Boy, was I wrong.
In a word, I would call this film...charming. Hathaway is charming, the other workers and Interns at the start-up are charming and DeNiro (believe it or not) is the most charming of all.
Starring as Ben - a widower who is just withering away with inactivity and boredom who decides to go back to work - DeNiro shows he "still has it". His Ben is a strong character, as nuanced as one can be in this type of film and...yes...EXTREMELY charming. DeNiro most definitely is NOT phoning this one in - he gives it a very good effort (maybe not A+, but...) and it shows. He is on screen for almost every scene and holds our attention throughout.
Proving to be a worthy partner in this film is Anne Hathaway's driven Internet sensation, Jules. She spars with DeNiro throughout and the two make a fun pairing.
Also joining in on the fun is Rene Russo as a masseuse (and love interest for DeNiro and Andrew Rannels as Jules' ass't. But it is the trio of Adam Devine, Zack Pearlman and Jason Orley that almost steals this film as 3 knuckleheads that work with - and are mentored by - DeNiro's Yoda-like Intern. I almost would have preferred to see a film about these 4.
Nothing in this film is revolutionary or new and Director/Writer Meyers keeps it that way. It's like pulling on an old, comfortable sweater or a really well worn-in pair of shoes. It won't win any awards, but it is fun..and, yes...charming just the same.
THE INTERN is now streaming on NETFLIX and AMAZON PRIME, if you are looking for a...I'll say it one more time...charming...way to spend an evening - look no further than here.

Mike (Adam Devine), and his brother Dave (Zac Efron), are a couple of easy going and fun loving guys who make their living as liquor salesman, often using some elaborate schemes.
One evening their parents greet them with an ultimatum, they must bring dates to their sister’s wedding in Hawaii. The reason for this is that in their exuberance, Mike and Dave have been known to go overboard in trying to impress the ladies, which has resulted in some epic disasters at numerous family events.
Desperate to appease their Sister Jeanie (Sugar Lyn Beard), the duo turn to the internet to try to find nice girls who will go with them to Hawaii. Naturally they are flooded with thousands of e-mails from girls hoping to score a free trip and their efforts soon get them on a talk show, where they tell their story.
Enter Alice (Anna Kendrick) and Tatiana (Aubrey Plaza); two lifelong friends who have just lost their jobs after Alice was brutally left at the altar on her wedding day. The two see Mike and Dave on television and devise a plan to pass themselves off as decent ladies to score the free trip. The plan works and in no time they are in Hawaii and getting ready for the events.
Unfortunately for Mike and Dave, the two girls are not what they appear as they are actually foul mouthed party girls with a passion for wild and reckless behavior and who lack any sort of internal censor.
Combine this with the internal family tensions that can arise at such events it is no surprise that this wedding is on a fast path to disaster.
What follows is a series of crude, outrageous, and hilarious events as Mike and Dave clash with the girls, family, each other and learn more about life, love and family.
The cast works well with one another and there are some truly funny sequences such as the relaxing massage and musical number. The cast works very well with one another and you will want to watch the outtakes during the final credits as they add even more laughs to the film.
While it is mainly a comedy that uses every bit of its R rating, there are enough laughs for those who are willing to overlook some of the issues with the film’s pacing and basic premise, but remember it is a comedy, and if you do not mind this type of humor, you will find yourself laughing along frequently.

For those, like me, who fell in love with the sleeper hit that Pitch Perfect was 3 years ago, Pitch Perfect 2 delivers the “more” we clamored for. In that regard, it’s as good if not better than the first. Sure, it’s missing that surprise factor that charmed even the most jaded critics. But those who wanted more a capella mash-ups from the Bellas and Treblemakers, more audacity from Fat Amy, puzzling confessions from whispering Lilly, off-color commentary from John and Gail and brash riff-offs with other a capella crews – rookie director Elizabeth Banks delivers.
There may be complaints that she offers just more of the same, but that’s what the fans wanted, right? That message was delivered a bit heavy-handedly, especially when the Barden Bellas, three-time defending champions, appeared to be losing their way with more convoluted productions and choreography that detracted from their singing. When one particular performance goes mortifyingly sideways, or in this case upside down, in front of the President and First Lady no less, the Bellas are stripped of their championship tour and threatened with disbanding. To keep their charter they have to be the first U.S. team to win the world championships. Hanging their hopes on a world title, they have to beat the ridiculous perfection that is the German team, Das Sound Machine. To beat the Germans, they need to find their sound again and deliver more of what got them there in the first place.
Anna Kendrick returns as adorably a ca-awkward Beca, but this time around instead of finding her place in college, she’s preparing to find her place in the music industry, unbeknownst to the rest of the Bellas. She’s ready to move on with life after a capella competition, while Brittany Snow’s Chloe isn’t quite there yet. Skylar Astin is back as boyfriend Jesse who now leads Treblemakers with Benji (Ben Platt) whose magic skills improved more than his ability to speak to women.
As in the first movie, Elizabeth Banks and John Michael Higgins deliver the absurd observations with perfect aplomb. Rebel Wilson, Ester Dean and Hana Mae Lee reprise their respective roles as fat Amy, butch Cynthia, and weird Lilly. Adam Devine also returns as Bumper while Oscar-nominee Hailee Steinfeld is the new kid on the block as a legacy Bella, courtesy of her mom Katey Sagal, a Bella in the 80s.
While the storyline is predictable, Pitch Perfect 2 is still entertaining and comes with some fun surprises. Fans will not be disappointed. And stay through the credits.
