ClareR (5885 KP) rated Nightshade in Books
Jan 15, 2023
As much as I loved reading this book, the main character Eve Laing is not a character to like. She’s self-centred, driven and oblivious to anything other than her work. She’s an artist,, but better known as the muse to an infamous male artist, much to her disgust.
Eve seems to be set on self-destruction, and over the course of a night walk through London (she’s braver than me!) from her former family home to the studio she now lives in, Eve tells her story. She’s an unlikeable and unreliable narrator. I will admit that I did feel some sympathy for her when her young lover shows his true colours.
And I kept thinking: why shouldn’t she want more? Because she’s married? Because she’s in her 60’s? Because she’s a mother? She’s clearly not a happy person and envies the life she imagines that she could have had.
I don’t think I’m giving too much away when I say that this is a book that can’t end well. And it may well say something about me when I say that I rather liked the ending.

Codus (2 KP) rated Thank U, Next by Ariana Grande in Music
Mar 6, 2019
Obvious bangers like "thank u, next" and "7 Rings." (2 more)
There are plenty of remixes, and Mixes.
Very telling of style, while experimenting with new styles
A Fairly Balanced, but Far-reaching album
Being the proclaimed "Grounded-Pop-Queen", Ari brings a lot to the table for 2019; with the obvious bangers "thank u, next" and "7 Rings."There are plenty of remixes, and Mixes of several songs that will stimulate the club scenes for years to come, celebrating the young artist as the new Mariah Carey.

Wonderfully written book, full of emotion in every single sentence.
One of the few that have made me see the world in a different way. I love how the author describes the love she feels for the artist. I love how she describes the way he feels about her. I love how she described the room that they slept in so well, that old mattress...
This is for sure one of the books that you need to have in your library.
Thank you Susan, for sending me this book! I feel lucky to have it!

The Craggus (360 KP) rated Welcome to Marwen (2018) in Movies
Jan 4, 2019
Zemeckis' real life toy story lacks buzz. Welcome To Marwen (2018) Review
Inspired by the true story of Mark Hogancamp who, having suffered a horrific attack, finds solace and support in an elaborate fantasy art installation, Robert Zemeckis sets out to convey a poignant story of the healing power of art and the dangers of the artist becoming too enraptured by the art itself but never once realised that he’s fallen victim to the exact same thing as the protagonist of this always watchable if somewhat disjointed dramedy...

David McK (3562 KP) rated Brick City: Lego for Grown-ups in Books
Jan 30, 2019
A hard one to categorise, this: it's not a story (obviously!), so no plot, nor is it a traditional educational book.
In the end, however, I decided to categorise it as educational simply 'cos it shows what can be done with LEGO blocks!
The book, itself, is really just photos (with, in most cases, building instructions for those with enough of the right kind of pieces) of the Lego counterparts of real-life buildings, most made by LEGO artist Warren Elsmore and a few by other contributors.
Makes me jealous!

Claire (4 KP) rated Human by Rag 'n' Bone Man in Music

The words of 'Human' says it all
A fantastic voice which express the words which inturn have a deep meaning within themselves. It's nice to be able to hear the words and to realise they have such a deep impact. The music and beat help the words to be expressed in such a melodic manner too. His voice is divine too!!
A fantastic artist, can't wait to hear more.
Thank you for sharing such brilliance with us.
