An amazing horror
Six female friends go on an adventure to explore some caves in the Appalachian mountains, where things don't go quite to plan. Focusing on Sarah, we follow the girls in their struggle for survival as they face claustrophobia, darkness, unstable footing, and the things that lurk in the caves.

It's a simple plot that allows us to focus on the characters themselves, each with their own distinct personalities. You get to know the 6 girls in a short amount of time and you can see their struggles and fears.

Genuinely terrifying, well worth a watch.

Stranger Things - Season 3
Stranger Things - Season 3

I'm starting to tire of the concept I think
Series three follows the established formula, of happiness, weird things happen, everyone gets involved, Steve gets a kicking while the kids hide, Hopper and Joyce save the day.
While the series continues to be atmospheric and full of nice 80s references, I really think I am starting to tire of the show. The fact that it is supposed to be centred around the kids is strong, and yet they get involved in so little of the action that it is a let-down. Imagine if in the Goonies the gang got to One-eyed Willie's booby traps only for Chunk's uncle to appear to get them through it, while they complain about snogging in braces.
Hopefully series 4 will be more interesting and mix things up a little.

A subpar horror
The story about Chernobyl is a rather terrifying and hauntingly true story, and having been there in person it is definitely a chilling and atmospheric place to visit. Sadly this film completely misses the point and meaning behind the story.

It is just your generic horror film. Terrible acting with a dull plot with pathetic jump scares. Characters making ridiculous nonsensical decisions that only make sense in a crappy horror. Some bad cinematography featuring scenes that are so dark you can’t see what’s going on, and I’m not convinced about how realistic their version of the location is - at one point the characters seem to make it from the Ferris wheel in Pripyat to the power plant (which is around 2 miles away) in no time whatsoever. A completely ridiculous film that squanders such a fascinating and horrifying true story.

Near Dark (1987)
Near Dark (1987)

A relatively simple tale of a recently turned vampire and his initiation into a sadistic group of other vampires (we assume that’s what they are as the V word isn’t said once in the film) is an atmospheric and compelling watch that stylistically is more like a western than anything else. Kathryn Bigelow’s use of a fair chunk of future husband James Cameron’s ‘Aliens’ cast is largely successful (apart from some quite hammy overacting from Bill Paxton) and they make for thoroughly nasty adversaries (that bar scene being particularly brutal). I also liked the haunting Tangerine Dream score which adds nicely to the atmosphere but didn’t really buy the fact that vampirism could seemingly be so easily cured by a simple blood transfusion. That was a minor quibble though and overall I thought the film worked well.

Gemini Man (2019)
Gemini Man (2019)
2019 | Action, Drama, Sci-Fi
Long-in-the-works Will Smith vehicle certainly feels like it's from the 90s. Government assassin decides to retire, but knows too much and finds himself the target of his own clone replacement. First and foremost a decent action movie, with a rather better performance (or performances) from Smith than you might expect; on a procedural level it rattles along engagingly enough.

However, the movie almost wholly fumbles all of its potential for addressing deeper issues in any but the most superficial manner - nature vs nurture, second chances, issues of identity, and so on. The manner in which it is filmed (for the special high frame rate 3D) is blandly appealing but not exactly atmospheric. In the end it is reasonable entertainment but all things considered you could be forgiven for expecting something rather more substantial.
