Deacon's motto throughout the book is "Be your own advocate," and she uses the book to teach the reader how, with multiple resources that can be found both in books and on the internet. The chapter on label reading introduces the reader to the concept of the chemical body burden, which "refers to the accumulation of chemical ingredients in the human body." This chapter was incredibly illuminating, as I am sure most people do not consider the cumulative effect of all of the manufactured products that we use on a day-to-day basis, or even how different chemicals in these different products can react negatively with one another. Governmental bodies such as Health Canada or the U.S. FDA, are also shown to be of little help in curbing the influx of chemicals into the retail market that have been presented to be linked to illness and disease - and are sometimes even prohibited from use in European countries. She gives a list of the 20 worst chemicals to avoid and why on page 31 - a list which had me examining every product in my bathroom.
Each chapter begins with some basic information about the body parts mentioned to illustrate why and how the chemicals found in products can harm the body. Every chapter is supplied with a list of products that can be found on the internet applicable to that chapter's topic along with the pros and cons of each product. If that is not enough, she also supplies recipes for do-it-yourself homemade body care products, such as face masks, hair treatments, and lipsticks.
The book also teaches that many of the common "spin" words that companies use to promote a product as safe or healthy are, in fact, meaningless, without an industry-standard definition: natural, hypoallergenic, botanicals, pure plant essence, herbal conditioning, purifying, and nourishing, to name a few. Other words can be used to hide chemicals, such as fragrance or perfume, as the companies are not legally required to list the chemicals used to achieve them. Even the regulated word "organic" can not always be trusted as anything with less than 60% organic ingredients can not be truly organic.
In short, this book is a priceless commodity for me, and with it I hope to detox both my home and and family, adding years to all of our lives.
Steph (468 KP) rated Beauty Sick: How the Cultural Obsession with Appearance Hurts Girls and Women in Books
Jul 9, 2018
The book is told through a mixture of psychology research and stories told by real women. The mix of facts and anecdotes was perfect. You got the knowledge and science behind beauty sickness. But you also heard the voices of women tell their own tales in a very human and relatable way.
What is absolutely terrifying and shows how beauty sick our culture really is, is that while reading this book, I often felt like I should be engaging in the negative behaviors that were discussed. For example, hearing about how people use special software to edit their photos before posting on social media made me consider doing that before posting my next photos!
But this book also changed the way I think of myself and my body in a positive way. I thought I knew about the negative effects of the media on body image, especially as a psychologist myself. I was unprepared for how little I actually knew, especially when it came to misconceptions about our bodies and how we treat them. I read the chapter on shame and started crying, because I related to so much of it. I didn't realize that I was trying to motivate myself to lose weight by shaming myself into feeling bad about my weight and what I was eating until I read this book. Beauty Sick has changed the way I think about myself and given me new strategies for cultivating a positive self-image and loving my body.
I loved that the section on what we can do about beauty sickness was so extensive. It really opened my eyes to how I think about and treat my body as well as what I can do differently to improve my self-image. I've always hated exercising. I never realized that the reason I hated it was probably because I always thought the point was to lose weight. Exercising felt like a punishment to me- something I had to do so I could shave off a few pounds. I never thought about viewing through a "look what I can do!" lens or to think about what I might have fun doing instead of what I *should* be doing.
I read this book ravenously- staying up late to read just one more chapter and sneaking pages in at work to devour its content. I needed to hear both how beauty sick our culture is and what I can do about it. I think every woman would personally benefit from reading this book. I hope its message becomes widespread and that we can make positive changes in our culture to decrease beauty sickness. In the meantime, we can make changes in our own lives and in the lives of the women we love by reading this book and applying it to ourselves and the people we love.
Carma (21 KP) rated Fast Burn (Body Armor, #4) in Books
Jun 17, 2019
Brand hasnt had the easiest life, his family is unconventional but loving and he likes being part of the SBC. He has made great friends, had a ton of new opportunities and feels like he is wanted somewhere finally.
Sahara Silver inherited the Body Armor agency from her deceased brother. Not that she believes he is dead, no way in hell. She has made it her mission lately to find out where her brother is and what exactly happened to him. She wont accept his death short of a body showing up on her doorstep.
Brand has denied his attraction to Sahara for a while, as hard as that is some days, until she becomes dragged in as part of her brothers mysterious disappearance. When she is kidnapped he jumps into action to make his claim to be by her side known to any and all that dared threaten it. He will protect her at all costs.
Sahara knows Brand will do anything to save her and she hates being vulnerable. She has always had to prove she is as capable as any man in her employ. She hates the double standard that women have to endure and sets out to prove not all women are fragile little creatures.
Can Brand and Sahara figure out her brothers mysterious circumstances before its too late? Can they fight their attraction to one another to focus or will it make them stronger to be full out partners in more ways than one?
Good secondary interactions from all the familiars, Rowdys Place, SBC, and of course Leese, Justice and Miles (along with the women that love them). Plus fun new characters like Brands Dad who basically has every gun known to man in his basement.
Another strong story from Lori Foster with good twists and turns. It will keep you guessing for the majority of the book (unless you are a good figure outer like me hehe) but if you are a quick study it still doesnt disappoint with suspense, excitement and action. I am so bummed this series has ended with this novel but knowing there are more Lori Foster books on the horizon carries me through (just barely haha).
I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review. My ebook had some missing words and sentences which I have no way of knowing if it was technology error or something that will carry through to the paperback et al versions. Overall definitely a book for the forever shelf to re-read over and over again. Until we meet again Body Armor!!
Ivana A. | Diary of Difference (1171 KP) rated The New Power Eating: More Muslce, More Energy, Less Fat in Books
Jan 25, 2019
But, with this book, it was different.
For some of you, that know me better, I used to train karate since I was a child. My father was my coach, and I trained hard, more than four days a week. I was a national champion for 8 years, I went on Balkan, Regional and European Championships, the sport enabling me to travel in more than 15 countries, explore the world and make countless number of friends along the way.
And in my whole journey, there were many experts surrounding me. Firstly, my father, who was my coach, showing me the karate world and teaching me everything I know today. Along his side, other coached, psychologists, gym experts, and nutritionists.
‘’The field of sport nutrition practice is both a science and an art.’’
When it comes to nutrition, it is so easy to get it all wrong, while you think you are doing something healthy to your body. It is so easy to mix good with bad fats, and thinking you eat healthy, to get away from your goal and become disappointed. And that is the sole reason why we need people that really know their nutrition, and dedicate their lives to learning what each ingredient does to our body.
This book focuses on nutrition for sports people. A way of life and healthy eating, while you spend a lot of energy exercising. I could easily relate to this, as I myself have been through all of these phases, of being dehydrated, of needing more fat, of needing more protein and vitamins in my body, without even realising it.
‘’When females perform high-intensity training, their need for carbohydrate is easily as high as that of a male athlete, and they have just as much capacity to utilize and store carbohydrate as a male athlete.’’
In this book, you will find explanations on all subjects that are often asked, you will know what builds muscle, what fuels it. Many popular issues will be covered as well, such as the gluten problem that many people face this days.
I loved the section about fats, as I have been introduced to the keto diet recently, and it was good to read and learn more about how fats work in your body, and what happens when you burn them.
I enjoyed the snack and workout plans, that are also split depending on what you want to achieve, whether that be building muscle, losing fat, or power eating.
‘’Research on sport nutrition in female athletes has long been neglected, but now there is breakthrough scientific knowledge that is changing the game of female athletes, including young girls.’’
If you love working out, and love your healthy food – this is a great book to have along your side, and come back to it from time to time, to remind yourself of everything your body is capable of doing, if you treat it right.
I highly recommend it – I enjoyed it a lot!
Thank you to Edelweiss+ and Human Kinetics for providing me a free copy of this book, in exchange for my honest review.
